Unpopular opinion, but the only legit reason to prefer subs over dub is so that you can watch shows as soon as they come out. I usually don't gaf about reading subtitles, but when you've been studying all day, the last thing you want to do is to keep reading. I remember it used to feel like a chore getting through some shows, then I switched to dub and regained my binging ability.

To me subs are a bridge for self-important filthy gaijin to "feel superior." IMO if you want to truly be enlightened, you learn Japanese and just watch the raws, or just watch it in your dubbed primary language of choice.

There's a reason 90% of people on Netflix use dubs, ain't no one trying to read after a long day at work.

Dubfags always make these subjective arguments to work around the objective fact that the original japanese vocal performances are an integral part of the artistic work and that the talent pool for English dubbing is just awful. Nobody just enjoys the experience of having to look at the bottom of the screen to understand the dialogue and rawchadding is the end goal of all subfags, but how can you hope to learn a foreign language if you can't even read in your own?

Oh I'm not even arguing for dubs. I'm actually learning Japanese so that I don't need to read subtitles because I realize that in order to truly enjoy anime, you should watch it as intended. My argument is more of a "either go all the way in or all the way out" routine. Basically learn the language and don't read subs, or just watch it in English.

If you're using the subs to help learn Japanese that's okay, but just having the idea that you'll just watch anime forever while reading subs is crazy.

There are a rare case where dubs are fine or better, but those require the original anime to be shit, or it's some shonenshit that isn't offensive to westerners and gets spared "modernization".

Don't blame the consumer for what is clearly the fault of the localizers - that means VAs and the people who manage them. Put a little more effort into your craft and people would watch it and call out your fellows for phoning it in. Every phone in performance just reinforces dub's shit status.

Subs got me to start learning and doing my anki reps + cracking open genki 2 years ago and I'm N2 now, op probably has ADHD and a low IQ (likely brown as well). You are objectively inferior if you watch English dubs, subs are still bad because of filthy gaijin translation but at least they can hear the original Japanese. If you watch dubs I think you don't watch anime or like anime. If you watch a dub and say "completed!", to me you've never watched it in the first place and any opinion you give on the show is less the a sub watcher. I will value none sub/dub watchers over both of you of course but a sub watcher I'll at least listen to and converse. A dub watcher gets an automatic ignore, they are of less value then dirt. Dub watchers aren't anime fans. Sub watchers are anime fans but I would prefer they all try to learn Japanese eventually.

Learning Japanese is a very longterm process and you're still going to need subs for most anime until you reach a high enough level of fluency. It also only gets harder as you get older and don't have as much neuroplasticity to help you remember all the kanji and shit (which is more of an issue for manga, to be fair).
Even if you don't know a word of Japanese, that's still not an excuse to settle for the atrocious voice acting and rewritten fanfiction scripts that all dubshit has.

Dubs most of the time are awful not only because the dubs change context and content to suit their political agendas, but also because of the overall quality of the voice actors.
For the Japanese their voice actors are really important and they offer an incredible range their voices for a single VA.
The tonation of the voice and everything not only gets selected because a VA is famous, but because they support the character itself in establishing if they are the hot and bothered type, calm and collect and so on.
While most western voice actors are simply incapable of doing so.
Just hearing Frieren in English or German is awful.
Like it feels like the character is an entirely different personality, because dubs do not care about carefully selecting a VA that breaths life into the character the way they were intended to do so.

Kanji is what's difficult to learn. Most people say that in order to get good enough to learn Japanese to the level of "watching anime without subtitles" you need about a year of study. Not bad for those of us that have been watching anime for over a decade.

I'm not a snob about it, but it's objectively true that the original Japanese performances are the intended performances, and 99% of all dubs fail to even recognize what the original performance was trying to accomplish, much less imitate it effectively. Just listening to the Japanese, even though I can't understand most of it, I can understand more about the characters and scenes than I can from the dub. I can still hear the tone and nuance in delivery.
Frankly, I don't care about what some random Texan decided as an interpretation of a (usually poor) translation of the original script. I'd rather the same Texan just do voice acting for some western animation, made with western sensibilities. Unfortunately, most western media is utter crap, which is precisely why I'm watching anime instead.

Subs are basically like watching a movie with some big movie star in it. And not some forced "star" like Pedro Pascal or Zendaya, but some legit draw bringing people to the movie theaters for 30 fucking years of blockbusters and niche indie films and everything in between.
