I have never laughed once at anime comedy

I think I laughed occasionally when watching Cro High but I was a teenager then so I don't know how it holds up. I rarely laugh at anything, but even then I can tell anime and manga isn't funny.

Jokes aren't as funny when you have to read them. Especially stilted awkward translated versions of jokes prefaced by a dozen translation notes (assuming the translator even bothers to add them). Not to mention the comedic timing getting destroyed by the subtitles showing early half the time.

Learn 日本語, become a dubfag, or continue your joyless humorless subtitle reading existence. Alternatively, just stick to watching battle shounen anime like the rest of the ironics. Your choice.

Comedy notoriously does not translate culturally. Have you noticed that there are next to no comedy movies in theaters any more, when they were everywhere 20 years ago? In an increasingly global market, these aren't commercially viable to studios.
A big part of it specifically is timing. I'll read a comedy manga, at my own pace, and think it's funny; but when it gets an anime adaptation, the same joke just doesn't land because the timing is off. You, for instance, would never see something like Abbot and Costello in Japanese, it's too snappy and fast paced for their taste.
The only anime I've ever found funny was Azumanga. It's so absurdist and off-kilter that the longer beats and odd pacing add to the feel of the jokes, rather than detracting from it.

Good comedy anime is one of my favorite things in the world but there certainly is a massive amount of abysmal shit out there. The batting average must be like a tenth of what you get in English comedy.

There just seem to be a lot of really bad ideas of what's funny in Japanese culture. You find almost all of them in harem series and in eroge. Shonen comedies have some really obnoxious tendencies as well.

I actually get the most consistent enjoyment out of shojo series, which I guess makes sense since it's the polar opposite of those

Most anime isn't funny, even "funny" anime is usually trash.

Grand Blue made me laugh a few times but they reuse jokes a lot. Panty and Stocking is funny but it feels very western.

JJK Baki and Ragna Crimson are the naturally funniest manga I've ever read.
Most unfunny is clearly One Piece.
