Onimaru still may have wound up with the sword eventually. His family were the ones keeping it.
Onimaru could have also just said "Hey kid, I'm at school right now. But come by the dojo this afternoon and I'll beat you up again." and they could have continued sparring under normal kendo rules. They might have even become friends.

Or maybe, just maybe, Yaiba may have not bothered Onimaru the way he did in the first place if the latter did not pull this off to the former in the first episode? But I anticipate that people nowadays will just excuse it away as "putting a brat in his place" since people hate kids nowadays.

In any case, people miss the point of their characterization(at least in the remake)that they're pretty much two sides of the same coin and both are at fault for everything happening in the show.

I think that was appropriate. Yaiba is a fightfag, he's in to that sort of thing. But you can't just go getting a fightfag amped up like that and then blueball him by refusing to fight him again.
So ironically, if Onimaru had been more violent and aggressive things could have been averted. It was his "I'm too good for you" hot and cold routine that escalated things with Yaiba. If he'd just been a hot blooded fightfag himself they would have gotten along just fine.

It's less of Yaiba being into that sort of thing and more of Onimaru's intention. The latter is clearly trying to intimidate the former in the pic I showed.

Or rather, have Onimaru not be up in his ass with "I'm too good to be wasting my time on you" schtick and humble enough to just accept Yaiba's demand for a duel, this wouldn't have happened. His own pride was his downfall here.

I think he goes too far in the other direction. Some of his stuff feels sluggish and weightless. The hashire melos fight is the best example where, despite the technical skill that went in to it, the final product is simply not good.
