The modern state of Japan was literally built from the burning rubble by the US and has remained one of their closest allies. I find it baffling how /a/ has gotten it into their heads that the institution of anime would be any less mainstream than any of the other massive cultural exports like Mario and Hello Kitty. If you want to gatekeep what constitutes "anime" to only mean the weird otaku shit /a/ watches, then that lot isn't even mainstream in Japan

And part of the reason people in general have noticed is because western live action and animated TV have both completely shat the bed this past 10-15 years. You can probably count in 1 hand the amount of actually good shows from those past 10-15 past out of the hundreds and hundreds that have come out on cable, streaming, etc.

Anime has been mainstream for longer than probably most of this thread has been alive.
The term "Big Three" literally refers to the idea of anime becoming mainstream around 2006 through three series achieving dominance in western culture. Prior to that, there had been Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, and Ranma, all of which were excessively popular, and before those had been Robotech.

Anime is not uniquely becoming mainstream now, we're just seeing further and further extensions of existing popularity and retards who probably only have a list of finished shows in the double digits (half of which were dubbed) going "NOOOOO THEY'RE TAKING OVER MY NICHE HOBBY".
Like, Dragon Ball got a Hollywood film over 15 years ago. It sucked and everyone hated it, but that being the general reaction was also a sign of anime's mainstream status, that it was hated for not being like the Japanese cartoon.
Fuck, remember the Final Fantasy craze? Hetalia? The entire popular American store dedicated to selling Soul Eater and Death Note t-shirts for teenage girls and their simp followers?
God I hate newfags.

Anime isn't actually good, it's just the preferable alternative to America's infatuation with ugliness and filth.

>anime is mainstream
Donโ€™t get too excited weeb, itโ€™s still only Battle Shonen and Ghibli, aka the most normie friendly anime out there that lack any of Japanโ€™s proclivities for weird shit such as pedophilia and incest.

Anything outside of these two genres is still as niche and mocked as itโ€™s ever been and rightfully so.

Damn anon, I didnโ€™t start screeching anime needs to suddenly start banning blackjack and hookers, just pedoshit and incest, which is a reasonable opinion even the hardest core (normal) kinksters would have.

If anime just featured HBO mature-tier like gore and rape (of adults), but didnโ€™t touch the subject of lolis or incest then neither I nor most of the non-puritan general public would have a problem with it and the entire medium itself would be ACTUALLY mainstream instead of a few select series.

No I mean my friends and wider social network can be described as progressive college students and liberal working class and everyone is very open emotionally and intellectually. It's a wonderful environment where I see random people wearing anime shirts every day and not even professors bat an eye if I suddenly use anime as a source text. In fact a grad school teachers in a recent course had one of those silly brand of sacrifice tattoos. In fact the level of genuineness in dealing with peers has only skyrocketed in the past few years; I've seen multiple sorts of humanities courses from intro to graduate level become vibrant peer groups who cry at the end of a mere semester together.

How the fuck did you even come to that conclusion from a sentence that implies none of that?

Prior to the 2000s (you were probably not even born yet judging from your posts):

1. People were less connected to the internet in the world.
2. Videos tapes and DVDs were your primary source for anime (which you HAD to buy or rent and not pirate or stream over the internet)
3. Locally there were not many titles to pick up because barely anything was dubbed/translated.
4. Assuming you are not in Japan those kids shows are like the few of the maybe 10 or less anime you will ever see for the next decades.

>2. Videos tapes and DVDs were your primary source for anime (which you HAD to buy or rent and not pirate or stream over the internet)
And guess what, video stores were on every street corner.
>3. Locally there were not many titles to pick up because barely anything was dubbed/translated.
There was plenty- both bootlegs (which video stores and convenience stores would carry because they are all independent for the most part, even ones that were part of chains were individually owned and maintained) and official ones, especially during the early 2000s and late 90s.
>4. Assuming you are not in Japan those kids shows are like the few of the maybe 10 or less anime you will ever see for the next decades.
Can't even understand this through the severe ESL.

Homosexuality is literally degenerate by the original meaning of the word. Historically prevalent forms of lesbianism and pederasty are different from the degeneration of your brain that causes true homosexuality.
And women marrying and having their first child before turning 16 was normal until 50 years ago. Normal is the opposite of degenerate.

That's because we are older then you and can remember a time when anime wasn't anywhere near as mainstream as it is now.

>but but anime has been mainstream since 1998

Incorrect, you are mistaking popular and awareness of anime and of certain titles with mainstream. Anime may have stopped being obscure in 1998 in the West, but it wasn't as mainstream, as in, being everywhere like it was back in the days.

That's not how that works.
You're outing yourself as either being young or not actually watching much anime at all until recently, but there is a literal definable moment where anime "went mainstream". I mentioned it, it is a significant mover in regards to anime's influence in the west, that being the existence of a "Big Three", a term that solely exists and is used in regards to three titles in particular achieving massive success and popularity within English speaking countries at the same time.

Your later idea of anime "not being everywhere" is also fucking dumb. The only real big change is that comic book stores and game stores have anime figure sections, and even then, again, Hot Topic was a thing. Video stores were a thing. Barnes and Noble had a dedicated manga section longer than many people in this thread have been alive.

When I was a kid the manga shelf was maybe a few dozen titles in the far back as a side attraction to the comics section. Most recent B&N I went into had the front two rows dedicated to manga, LNs, and merch and the other local one I've seen has a manga, LNs and merch section in the back that's almost as large as the entire fiction section itself. There are even all sorts of Western knockoff LNs on the shelves too. I would have never imagined such a change back then.

See, saying shit like this makes me wonder if you aren't just baiting and being inflammatory because I don't know how you could remember the 2000s and see how the world is today and seriously believe nothing has changed. In late 2000s, you had suits at Disney saying 2D animation was dead. You saw anime getting dropped from broadcast television and anime in the West actually entered a slump for a brief while. Subcultures still existed and Hollywood blockbusters were still a major thing.

I'm 34 and European, through my lifetime I saw about three phases of the popularity of anime - though there were probably more. I started reading manga at 7 because my dad was very much into comic books.
>elementary and middle school phase
Anime as a whole were not popular. We had a dragon ball and 1st and 2nd generation pokemon craze in elementary school, and that was about it. After the age of 11 you were basically perceived as a weirdo for still liking stuff like One Piece instead of "growing up".

>high school phase (early 2000s)
Here I experienced a first jump in the popularity of anime and manga, but it was specifically only within emo/goth subcultures (so, I'd say, less than 20% of my class). The big threes brought boys into the media. Naruto was big. But Death Note is what made this jump: girls started appearing in comic book shops to buy gothic themed mangas (Kuroshitsuji used to be big). Internet also helped: with e-Mule and torrent, anime was the perfect internet content to download - short and easy to find. Fansubbers explode at this time. People start reading manga spoilers on the internet. We "dig" for stuff and start watching diversified things: Elfen Lied, Rozen Maiden, Haruhi, Lucky Star. In this period I'd say anime was grounded as a proper internet subculture, because more people got on the internet - although it likely existed before in other forms. Anime tropes become stronger.

>Zoomers and the pandemic
The majority of teenagers (especially gen Zs a few years ago) started engaging with the media as a proper hobby at some level. The pandemic and KNY going viral were the two milestones of this new phase - lockdowns brought lots of people on the internet, and people who never watched anime got brought in by shows like SNK. We are getting good animation, but anime tropes are getting weaker because they don't pander to the mainstream anymore. Geriatric millennials (me) complain about dying fanservice.

Wanted to expand a bit on the dying fanservice: for me, as a teenager, anime was not a part of everyone's life - it was a thing for people who felt different (losers, loners, autistic people, homosexuals, etc.) that circulated within a subculture. There was often a weird combination of cuteness and edginess, extreme violence for shock value and extreme infatile tenderness. I think it was because the people in the industry and the people consuming anime were mostly isolated people who struggled to grow up. Anime was giving us a platform to process feelings of being inadequate and lonely, and often also ways to talk/think about sexuality that we didn't have before (access to internet and pornography was more limited than today - no smartphones). It also made a lot of damage, I think, at least to me, in cultivating increasingly weirded out ideas of sexuality, factually making it even harder to socialize and meet girls. But it was kind of a safe place to escape to. Somehow it was also liberating to see shows for teens were sex was part of the picture, although in a deformed way - if you lived in the province, no adult wanted to talk about this stuff. Seeing horny male leads in anime made you feel like you were allowed to have certain desires (though, again: more often deformed, parodied, perverted, than healthy).
Nowadays anime is no subculture anymore, and it's not being sold to lonely weird people anymore, which means the contents are changing. I'm super happy that we're getting stuff like Chainsaw Man and JJK well animated, but I'm also a bit sad that we don't get hand-drawn mechas anymore, and that slightly fetishistic slice of life shows with cute girls don't really go viral in the community anymore. One Piece is finally almost watchable, and there's a lot of competent animators, but we also lost a bit of diversity I feel.
Anyway, I still love the media and will keep watching.

Because American TV has become split between reality slop and 6 hour long movie-series with insane budgets rather than focusing on what made TV fun, and anime has slipped in between the cracks and filled a content niche that would have been filled by low budget sci-fi/fantasy/mystery TV shows for younger people.

I've spent six months at the most densely late-millenial/early zoomer nerd workplace I've ever seen and everyone will talk video games and pop culture all day but nothing even remotely anime adjacent comes up

I don't know how he will remember it, but it's true that different age groups have different memories. Gen Zs have a very different relationship with Naruto than I have, for instance. I feel like for them it's kind of like what DB was for me.
Naruto was first published in my country when I was 12 so went through high school reading it - then when the anime came out I was already a teenager. For them, it's a kid's cartoon.
I like that we all have special relatinoships with these media coming out in different times - it's also a way we can bond cross-generationally, somehow.

>Anime is mainstream now
>now
What is wrong with you people, were you not around when Dragon Ball, Pokeฬmon, Yuugiou, Sailor Moon and even Gundam were the biggest things on the planet.

I really don't get people who act like it's gotten super mainstream. The only difference is that now you got a bunch more virgins who actually call it โ€œanimeโ€ which no one did back then. People just talked about โ€œPokeฬmonโ€ and โ€œDragon Ballโ€ and no one called it โ€œanimeโ€ like a fucking permavirgin.

Cr*nchyr*ll and n*tfl*x bet big that they could sell more 'palatable' anime to normalfags. They were correct and have now created an incentive structure where being successful in the west requires going through them, because some crazy percentage of all global anime watching happens on those platforms now. They abuse that power to fund and push a lot of the normalfaggot approved trash we see today and there's nothong we can do about it. Votong with your wallet means nothing when millions of retards vote the other way

Some other anon pointed out how its mostly the popular anime at the time that are mainstream. Just like how movies are mainstream, but its rarer to find someone who knows the more niche and obscure stuff. And I am not saying anything not mainstream is automatically niche or obscure. If you bring up Cardcaptor Sakura then you will know a lot of people that like it. If you bring up Princess Tutu then there will be significantly less. It depends on the show. I think anime still has a stigma attached to it if it isn't one of the popular/well known shows.

>The news makes attempts to make japanese media look juvenile and silly
Hasn't that always been the case?
The news is horrific. Local news can sometimes be decent, and even then its strength is for getting local news stories and learning about upcoming events. Everything else is worse than the worst 4chan argument threads you can imagine. Nothing but logical fallacies left and right (no pun intended).

A-1 is showing the world how amazing anime can be. SAO also deserves another reboot but with the "2 years" properly adapted and uncensored. And with actually good pacing this time.
