What I don't like is his fans who fail to realize the entire point of him is that he's exactly like Sasuke in how batshit insane he really is. The entire point is that he was wrong in the end. He fucked up. The entire situation was fucked but he just made it worse the way he handled Sasuke.

Real tragedy here is he gets a pass where Danzo doesn't despite Itachi being the one who actually kills his own family thinking it's the right thing to do.

Anyway I disliked how, like most characters when Sasuke is involved, he lacks his own personality and character, he entirely revolves around Sasuke, and even the mention of a girlfriend is to reinforce how he sacrificed everything for Sasuke (that's why I liked the anime adding a bit to her, so we can see him caring about someone beside Sasuke). Shisui could avoid this, but he's even more of a non-character and we have no idea why they had a bond.

My best theory is simply that Madara and Obito lied about them being humiliated and isolated by that, as they aren't the most reliable sources.

So Kishimoto puts these chapters here to answer the question, "Why would Sasuke go as far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?" He shows us the extremes of Sasuke's relationship with Itachi, the loving older brother and the murderer who ruined his life, emphasizing the dramatic height of the fall from grace. Do we really need it? I guess it drives home Sasuke's angst, but I'm not sure anyone who wasn't sold on his motivation would be won over by it.

But the series doesn't act like that. Literally every character that knows the truth about Itachi thinks of him as a messiah who never did anything wrong and keeps calling him a great hero who always made the right choice.
I mean, he probably would've been a better character if the series was more aware of his imperfections. Like, focus more on how he did agree with Danzo, and that maybe he started hating his own clan for wanting to risk a civil war with the village. Kishimoto went too far in making him so seemingly perfect. Like, yeah, he ultimately failed and had to be bailed out by Naruto and Hashirama, but everything else about him is just too perfect. He's got an unbeatable Susano'o that oneshots everything it hits and tanks everything that hits it. He's got a genjutsu that can instantly kill even those who are explicitly stated to be immune to genjutsu. He knows Izanami, the "I win and you become a better person" jutsu. The weakest thing about him is Amaterasu. But even leaving out powerscaling it sucks. He planned everything from the start and was apparently not perturbed by Orochimaru potentially bodysnatching him so he must have factored that into his calculations. And he's the reason Edo Tensei more or less ends, both in terms of undoing the jutsu and in freeing himself from it so he can do that. And Hiruzen says he had the wisdom of the Hokage at age 5. Like come the fuck on stop sucking his dick already.

I still get a bit emotional when he dispels the edo tensei and tells Sasuke "You don't ever have to forgive me. I will always love you" though.

In retrospect, healing is parallel to Sakura. But the healing factor isn't just an Uzumaki thing, it's one of the defining scenes of Naruto. So it works more for Naruto than for Sakura. Anyway, I like that healing gets a creepy twist, since she has to give her body to Sasuke to consume. It emphasizes the creepy dynamic and her unhealthy obsession with him.

Itachi personally is a good character. He has a bad fanbase and he gets shilled by Kishi and other Naruto characters a little too much. That's about it. Regardless of the problems of the Uchiha Massacre and coup and how Itachi acted in his first appearance maybe not matching up, it's clear the truth about Itachi was planned by the time this flashback occurs. Also he just has a good, simple, design and powers. He's cool without it being forced.

I dunno, Itachi actually being a good guy didn't seem like a retcon to me, what bothered me more was how nonsensical Sasuke's reaction to the information was. He spent most of his life despising Itachi, living solely to kill him, and as soon as he finds out le truth it makes him suddenly love his brother wholeheartedly again, that's dumb. Also Itachi doing that to begin with is dumb, but I can believe Kishi intended it from the start.
