In our postmodern society that fully embraced subjective relativity of truth.
The only way to distinguish between a true masterpiece and worthless garbage carried to the top by a wave of half-genuine, half-engineered hype, something you shouldn't even consider spending your priceless time on.
The only way is to put it through the mercilessly-objective test of time.
It's terribly ironic and maybe a bit tragic that people who truly value their time must live in the past.

The vast majority of people saying this don't actually watch "classics", they just want to justify not watching much anime at all. They probably caught a couple OVAs or movies on TV, probably watched some shit on Toonami, and now LARP as someone with ascended taste for having seen shit EVERYONE has seen.
