I actually do like the way the author is dancing around the nuance here. Kitami's moral struggles have been very wishy-washy and a bit frustrating, but this chapter I think shows why the author's doing this.
He wants it to be clear that Kitami is an unwell person being tugged by many other unwell people. Each person he's interacted with so far has been some kind of fucked up. Kitami himself seems like the only person having reasonable moral qualms about stuff despite being a schizo going around murdering aliens.
