Fansubbers typically sold directly to fans via mail orders (send them an empty VHS tape and get a fansub copy back, you pay shipping), while bootleggers mass produced both fansubs, official subs and machine translated chinese subs.
If you bought "fansubs" in a store, they were usually bootlegs.

It's a tiny bit more distinct than that:
>Fully Localized Dubs (Astro Boy, Gigantor, Cyborg 009, Gatchaman) - 1970~
>Had a dad deployed in Hawaii or Japan (Ultimate Oldfag) - 1970s/80s/90s
>VHS Bootlegs - SF Conventions (1970s/80s~)
>VHS Bootlegs - Video Stores (1980s/90s)
>VHS mail circles (1990s)
>New Dubbing / Official Tapes (SF Channel, early Toonami) - Mid-late 1990s - Extends to early 10s
There's also early IRC/XDCC groups which are distinct as well.

I was never into fantasy so I never had any interest in Slayers back in the day. I would only watch the original TV series a few years back. Didn't enjoy it. I dislike how there is zero effort in trying to flesh out the characters. They have these quirky personalities, but no depth at all.

If you watched anime back in the day, you know there is a lot of crap from those days. It is nonsense to try to immerse in the nostalgia. The ratio of good to bad seems quite similar throughout the years. There is a lot of good stuff from the past, but there are loads of crap too.

Only reason I watched anime was because my sisters would rent Sailor Moon/Inuyasha/Escaflowne/Nadesico/Gundam/Slayers and what not. Recently reviewed every single TV anime and OVA between 1990 and 1999 to pick some for a marathon. Was stunned to see how few new shows there were per season, sometimes as low as just one, for the entire decade. We have more new anime every season now than entire years had in the 90s (even including OVAs). Oh and basically everything was 2+ cours.

Really made me think about various things.

Sure we move on, but we don't need to throw everything away. Like it or not, it is part of you. Desperately wanting to be seen as mature is something only little kids do. If they have great memories of watching Slayers, Escaflowne, Lodoss, etc.; great for them. It made them what they are now. Pretending you are above it and posting on a board that talks exclusively of chinese cartoons only makes you look like you are the one who can't move on.

Yeah most 30-40 year olds were like 10 years old when Gen X were collecting VHS tapes and hanging out in AOL chatrooms and usenet.
People need to remember most remember today's 40 year olds were still teenagers in the early 2000s.

Today's 30 year olds were the teenagers/children over Naruto, Gundam seed, Inuyasha, Full metal Alchemist, gurren lagann, azumanga, lucky star and shit.
People who genuinely watched Slayers in the 1990s when it was first being made available in the West (rather than later) are in their 40s and probably pushing their 50s now

That's one of the main things I find fishy about "30 year old oldfag" threads where 90% of the stuff being posted is from the 1980s and 1990s.

If you're in the 30-35 your formulative anime years was watching Naruto, Inuyasha, Hamtaro, Pokemon, FMA, Gundam Seed, Dragon Ball reruns.

Tenchi Muyo and Slayers were before your time unless you were somehow watching them when you were like 8.

My first experience with Dragon Ball, before it aired on TV, was picking out unlabeled black spine unsubbed bootleg VHS tapes from chinatown grocery stores. That one Simpsons "Steamed Hams" meme that edits it in the style of Dragon Ball really hits me hard, that yellow tint and everything. So good.

In the earliest days of tape subs, not every sub advertised a distinct group, because the internet was a pretty nascent thing. This is before the days of "realvideo", internet file distribution didn't exist*, it was more "if you know a guy who knows a guy". Hardware was needed to print subs onto tape so it'd typically be a college student with access to an AV lab, and if you wanted copies you'd mail him a blank tape with a SASE (there's a term genz will have to google, and get the wrong answer) and he'd copy it from his "SVHS masters", if you were lucky.

*I remember spending all day downloading .AU audio files of 3 seconds of Sailor Mercury shouting her attack names. I remember early windows pcs STRUGGLING to run .MP2 songs if you closed down every other program. I'm a digital packrat so I still have a lot of these files saved from the 90s.

>formulative anime years was watching Naruto, Inuyasha, Hamtaro, Pokemon, FMA, Gundam Seed, Dragon Ball reruns
But anon, the plight of those years was that I hated Naruto so the only place I could find the discussion and anime I liked was online. (Though I enjoyed all the other shows you mentioned). If you talk something older like CCS, Sailor Moon or Slayers, I likely caught a rerun or had a clip taped. But even if I couldn't remember much, it was still an influence on my taste so of course I seeked them out later

There's way too many anime now. The same could be said for media in general. Just total oversaturation, and it gets harder to find quality through all the noise. I miss when 26 episodes was the standard and 50 wasn't uncommon, instead of every manga and LN under the sun getting a 12 episode ad.

Saw CLAMP
Watched Patlabor 2 just a few feet away from head mech designer Yutaka Izubuchi
Met Noboru Ishiguro, director of LoGH and Macross:DYRL
Still, my favorite moment of all was pulling up to the video room and watching Slayers Great with a bunch of people who really enjoyed like I did.
I've never gone back because I can't top that. Such a good feeling.

Anybody here watch Golden Bat? It's really good stuff i even imported the tapes straight from japan back in the day. Shame only 4 episodes are fansubbed because i know it would be a cult classic if it was subbed however you can roughly make out the story without knowing Japanese as it is fairly easy to make out each of the stories in the episodes purely by visuals like i did back in the day.

It's nice not needing a smartphone glued to my face so that I can "obsess" over the latest astroturfed scam game or be completely unable to put myself into a different historical context when talking to older people, but the older guys I talk to usually aren't looking to be very sociable and have their longtime friendgroups already established, so I'm stuck in this middleground.

Anime was vastly more fun when you actually had to work to get it. Used to take road trips, 6 hours with my bros JUST to go to one of the few anime stores in the country. No Barnes & Nobles shit. Just a guy who flew to Japan and came back with every tape, laserdisc, manga, wallscroll, and paperback hentai doujin he could carry. Most fun I ever had in my life. 2000s brought torrents which was fine. Now there is so much slop, and of such little quality, and it is all equally disposable and unmeaningful. Now compare a primitive hunter bringing back his fresh kill to the celebration of the tribe, and the fat cows sitting on the couch eating infinitely accessible goychow through plastic tubes.

There certainly was something different about discovering new anime through a friend loaning you a VHS tape. Itโ€™s not just the novelty - when you finish watching, you have someone to actually talk to about it, someone you know.

Slayers always going to be one of my favs. Yeah itโ€™s rough as hell but it has its own vibe, great sub AND dub, and Lina is objectively the best female protagonist.

>Anime was vastly more fun when you actually had to work to get it
Oh, I totally get this sentiment. I've gotten so much more enjoyment out of the anime I get on random disks and tapes from resale stores than I would've if I downloaded it. The only reason I watched Cosplay Complex was because I got the DVD for two dollars from Book Off. Thankfully my tastes align with the bargain bin of video stores.
>Now there is so much slop, and of such little quality, and it is all equally disposable and unmeaningful.
Eh, it isn't like ALL the anime from back then were all hits. There were a fuckton of shows where the typical Three's Company-style humor of "misunderstandings are funny!" was the sole writing device. I liked the older artstyle more, but that could just be because it's what I'm used to.
>compare a primitive hunter bringing back his fresh kill to the celebration of the tribe
I agree that the fresh kill could have been muskrat and would still have tasted better than if you'd bought it (the "muskrat" here being fucking Ragnarok, LOL).

Naruto is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterscrew of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping ------ry and DARKNESS. The normal anon can see this as the poop it is, and may enjoy it, hate it or be indifferent to it, but all the while recognizing that the series itself, regardless of their opinion, is plain bad.

However, these very aspects that try to smear over the poop of its core make it a breeding ground for aspie, unsociable underageb& ------s who engage in every kind of ------ry both online and in the real world. The superpowered characters all trying their hardest to look cool, the jutsus, peculiar, colorful clothes, the whole ninja ------ry and everything about the Naruto world fuels their escapist fantasies, while the pity-party character backgrounds, emphasis on revenge, and overall preachiness of the series make it fit just right with the mary-sueish drives of your average preteen and his sense of unwarranted self-importance towards the world. Exactly the kind of poop that makes little kiddies and underageb& retards eat this poop right the screw up.

Naruto is basically THE series to attract the most hated anime fanbase known to /a/, which is why, regardless of individual opinions, it is the responsibility of every anon to troll the screw out of this show and everyone who likes it, and ensure that no Naruto threads ever encourage the newfags to show their faces here.

I think my first ever anime memory was of Robotech(at least I think it was because I have never actually watched it as a teen or adult) when a guy and a girl were trapped in some space wreckage and there was a big floating spacetuna outside. I liked the sexual tension, even though there probably wasn't that much by later romance anime standards, and the strangeness and creativeness of it; it was like nothing I'd seen in any western cartoon.

After that I watched all the late 90s early 00s Toonami stuff until I gave up in my eary teens and didn't touch anime again until 2007 when I was 16. I came to /a/ as it was over-run by Code Geass threads and spam. One of the first things I watched was TTGL, which I think had ended earlier that year. I lurked more than I watch or posted at first. I remember that I near marathoned the ENTIRE Zatoichi film catalog and only watched a little bit of anime. One of the first series I watched 'with' /a/. at least that I remember, was Toradora; which was a major presence on the board when it was airing.

How things have changed.

VHS and local anime channel for me, quintessential 90s experience and most millennials would have gone through this path. Watching anime via YT is for mid-late zoomers, I remember a Thai guy was exuding his mediocre power level around early 2010s anime boom era but it seems like he became a somebody, not that I give a damn.

I'm working on a fanservice page, summarizing the parts I consider the spiciest. I'm not an editing expert, but I'm doing my best haha. Any comments or advice are welcome. I've only done 5 episodes of Slayers so far, but I'll cover them all. I work on a few each week. Anyway, greetings.

Lina has more personality than the entire cast of frieren put together. I liked frieren for what it was, but besides casting magic thereโ€™s nothing in common with slayers at all.

>>281187017
Iโ€™ll shit on Naruto all day with you, but this is also a bizarre comparison. Hinata is a true wilting flower doormat who canโ€™t fight her way out of a paper bag. Sylphiel is an airhead, but extremely competent at her actual job.

Don't presume to know my reasons. There are many girls in anime who are similar to Hinata, who I also like, but her appeal for me goes beyond being merely demure or having a hime cut. While I of course think she's captivatingly beautiful and plain at the same time, with her gentle smile, and stark white eyes which can he tender or terrifying, she's such a kind soul so she never wants to hurt people. Even though she could be stronger, she never truly desired a warrior's life because her heart wasn't in it. As she matured she understood that being a warrior wasn't only about supremacy over others, but protecting the innocent, and people she loves.

She appears meek and submissive but is quietly defiant all along which leads to her losing her inheritance. Early in her life she decided that her family's acceptance wasn't more important to her that her dignity and happiness, which is very unorthodox for a woman raised in such a traditional household. She rejected it all in lieu of simply wanting create a home full of love. Yet it's in knowing Hinata isn't the strongest kunoichi in the village but also isn't just a placid wallflower either and had cultivated physical and mental strength throughout her life, is what shoots the love arrow through my heart.

She's a character I admire deeply, because she represents a positive selfishness, the pursuit of happiness, the desire for self-love and outward expressed love which is inherent in all anxious people. For me she represents the meaning of life itself. Looking at her grounds me. She calms me down. Her strong sense of self worth for its own sake makes me want to better myself too. I don't see her as a girlfriend or my wife. She's my friend.

depends on the country. I was born in 98 and to mid 2000s were a really good period to be a kid in morocco or in an arab country. On national TV, we had :
> OG yu-gi-oh
> megaman battle network (all seasons)
> Code Lyoko
> TMNT
> Ippo
> Naruto.
Everyone had a satelite antena, so everyone watched Spacetoon and MBC3 for the cartoons and MBC action for wrestling. Spacetoon had some 80s and 90s shows, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, Digimon, Captain Tsubasa, Slam Dunk, Detective Conan, Nadia, Sonic X and so on. MBC 3 was more cartoon oriented but it still aired all of yu-gi-oh and GX, Oban star racer, and good stuff like Chaotic, Di-gata, and Dragon Booster. Of course all of it was dubbed in Modern Standard Arabic, which nobody fucking speaks, and ranged from decent to atrocious.
When I got into anime in 2013, youtube still had anime episodes cut in 3 to 4 part on 480p max.

Yeah, born early 90s and to me stuff like Pokemon, Digimon, Yu Gi Oh, Medabots, Beyblade, Doraemon, Shinchan, Hamtaro, Rantaro, Inuyasha, CCS, Doremi, Detective Conan, Azumanga, Lucky Star and Naruto (even if I never liked it) among a long list of others resonate with me more than older stuff.
I definitely watched old stuff like Heidi, 3000 Leagues in Search of Mother, Candy Candy, Sailor Moon and Mazinger (which is stuff from my parent's time) when I was very very young on TV and of course the DB reruns up to GT and even not-so-old NGE, etc, but I was so young that I don't remember it all that well, and grew up watching most of the anime previously mentioned on TV and official VHS movies like Akira and some ghibli stuff until I got my pirate ship called a PC and ADSL internet and started watching subbed anime like Azumanga and Lucky Star and playing RO and only then started seeking older stuff seriously. Then I realized dubs were terrible. Then I guess I became a newfag and watch mostly seasonals ever since. /blog

Proper 30 year old nostalgia should be 2000s anime, yeah. Maybe late 90s at the earliest.
Though to be fair I did watch quite a few English dubbed OVAs when I was like 9-13 years old because the rental store had a few.
A bunch of dubbed hentai was just obliviously sitting in the cartoon section which was just a hodgepodge mix of anime and Western cartoons.

My grandmother rented me pic related (Magical Twilight/The Hex Files) because she didn't realize it was hentai, it was my first exposure to pornography and sex in general and I was so fucking confused because this show did some weird "artistic" censorship where the penises were invisible (but still solid so fluids like saliva were still on them floating in midair) and girls were holding and licking at nothing.

If someone is 30 years old today, then that would mean they would have been watching anime released between 2003 and 2008. We're talking Fullmetal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo, Code Geass, Gurren Lagann, and Soul Eater.

For someone to have been alive for Slayers to be a part of their formative years, they'd have to have been born between 1983 and 1988. They'd be 42-47 years old today. Anyone younger than that claiming they "grew up" with Slayers is lying their ass off.

i was only able to catch what was on tv, but most was crap like fighting foodons and samurai pizza cats and i always gravitated towards whatever OVAs and movies i could find since they had smoother animation, no filler and more ultra-violence and nudity. funny enough they had more villains with rational reasons for doing what they do instead of the retarded evil boss that kills his own guys and is evil just to be evil

Anime started getting dubs in my language in 1976, and then they started airing them in various channels with it peaking with early Spacetoon. Stuff like Tetsujin 28, Grendizer, Mazinger Z, Romeo's Blue Skies, Future Boy Conan, Aoki Densetsu Shoot, Captain Tsubasa, Virtua Fighter, Hamtaro, Remi, Nobody's Girl, and many more. Most of the 80s and late 70s generations would often quote these anime. They also made a lot of memes in the early 2000 when the Internet became more accessible. Some of the anime openings and voice acting were even better than the original. Their choice of anime was great, too. I'm not sure what the process was, but the anime they chose to dub were really good picks. I think they still get reruns to this day, I know they did up till 2019, so exposure is a bit similar. Too bad mobiles became more popular and with it making kids more inclined to consume worthless, easy to digest media.
