I get complaining about this Kurono and Reika scene being seemingly so tame considering it was the resolution of literally near 200 chapters of growing sexual and romantic tension between these two characters and the kind of manga this is, and I'm convinced that if it was placed any other place in the story, Oku would have delivered at least a full chapter of non stop sex, but this is the eve of the world's end and it's coming off after but Reika and K2 have just come to terms to what's essentially a very messed up situation. Reika isn’t actually bad as a female character as far as manga goes. Shounen manga struggle with female characters, and mangaka don’t know how to fit a feminine archetype into a shounen except just “the love interest” and a few other common types. For example, why couldn’t there be a normal housewife recruited to the Gantz room who everyone immediately writes off as “yup, dead”, but in the crucible of the battlefield she shows a hidden will for survival and overcomes it which she carries over that strength into her normal life, everyone around her noticing the change, etc. Human beings are not, in fact, hard to write, but JP always seems so hellbent on predefined tropes and genre law that they struggle to explore beyond those boundaries.

That’s because Japan really really really hates interpersonal conflicts. That’s why shounen romances are ALWAYS mono-romances, no matter how hard they are dressed up as harems or love-triangles, there is only ever one main couple and who they are is no secret. The Italy mission was completely wasted. I guess the mangaka just wanted to move on from burnout, but it was a great opportunity for a large-scale battlefield with dozens of Gantzers from different countries speaking different languages but just immediately jumping to one another’s aid, supporting one another, understanding each other just with a glance and a nod sort of thing. A desperate fighting retreat to a defensible position like a cathedral or someplace the statues can’t easily break through to, with their forces doing energy first aid, setting up defenses, figuring out a command council of different team leaders, getting past their language barriers through various ways, etc. It would have been kino as all fuck, and maybe Oku was thinking of something along those lines before burnout took over. I doubt Gantz or the aliens that gave the Gantz tech gave enough shit about if the aliens were refugees or not. It was a system to kill aliens so it will kill aliens. The whole point system was to encourage people to train and become better soldiers agaisnt the giant aliens. Just gamefy the whole experience so you encourage people to improve without having to explain anything. Really reward driven system. And it's not like all the aliens were peaceful, the vampires have been around fucking up shit for a while and the Osakan aliens seemed to be getting ready to do a big move even before the mission started.
