I've read the VN, haven't seen the anime, but there's more to him than that. I wouldn't necessarily describe him as overly confident, on the contrary he clearly is dealing with insecurities. He often puts on the mad scientist act to hide how he really feels: fear, anxiety, love towards his friends, etc. That mask has helped him push through tough situations. It's pretty funny watching him bickering with Kurisu. However, the moments where the mask slips and the real Okabe shines through are great. If you really simplify it down you could say he's an entertaining male tsundere.

Watched Haruhi for the first time a little over a half a year ago because of that twitter meme at the time that pushed me to finally check it out.
It ended up being the most fun I've had watching anime in what felt like forever. Instantly made it into my top 3.
And finally experiencing the work that had inspired/influenced other stuff that I've already liked made me appreciate it even more.

As a matter of fact I have. All of these except Paprika in the last month. Akira and Redline were beyond disappointments. Aside from good animation, they probably wouldn't even classify as B-tier films with their awful plotlines. Akira had a decent OST, but it was completely fucked by the sound editing since there were plenty of spots where it seemed like there should be music but there wasn't. Redline would have benefited from some actual script writing before they went ham on drawing every frame by hand for 7 years straight. Perfect Blue at least had an interesting plot that made you think a bit with the reveal, but it's still nothing compared to shit like Memento or Se7en.

Western animation like Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs are well rounded in animation, plot, and characterization, yet somehow Redline cannot be criticized just because it has good animation? I watched season 1 of K-On recently. I thought it was gonna be about music but it wasn't really. Probably not gonna watch season 2.

Forgot one. Was mostly spoiled over the years, and was hyped due to the fight scenes, but I wasn't let down upon finally watching Sword of the Stranger. Story and characters were a bit simple, but the fight choreography was impeccable, and the soundtrack you'd instantly remember just from hearing the first 3 notes of that wooden flute.
