Well yeah, if they had died then they wouldn't be able to tell you about their last thoughts, duh. Again, it fits just well. The whole point of the story is that in this purgatory they live out the parts of their lives they were missing. Youre weak, suicidal and cant call out for help due to that weakness? Its the opposite life for the haibane. Its clear their past lives and their haibane lives are connected. You know, the crows for example and their dreams and the mystery of solving that dream.

At some point I decided I no longer wanted to watch VHS, LD and DVD quality and limited myself to BD and HD streams.
