Tengen was the second most powerful hashira in the original lineup, the other's all had buffs and training that allowed them to do greater things than he could after he retired

Nah.
He was very very strong in versatility compared to the others , but he was still ranked below Himejima,Sanemi, Muichiro and Rengoku (also Obanai when he goes all in).
He was probably the best pillar to deal with Gyutarou, but mostly because any other pillar beside Himejima would’ve jobbed hard with the poison

My rank before the marking is:
1)GODJIMA
2)SALAMI
3) (OBANAI WHEN NOT SLACKING)
Muichirou
4)RENGOKU
5)UZUI
6) REGULAR OBANAI
7)TAPIOKA
8) MITSURI
>powergap
9)SHINOBU

Obanai had 4 months to train and did well against muzan late into the fight

and dude, muichiro was just outright weak for a Hashira, he was 14

Obanai ‘s situation is due to his weak body .
When he can go all out he can outrank most of them, but 90% of the time he cannot do that. This is the reason why he didn’t restrained himself against Muzan , since he knew by that point it was all or nothing (and he was not going to survive anyway).
Muichiro was a glass cannon prodigy, he style in execution is the water equivalent of the Thunder breathing. Which means he can speedblitz an opponent to win.
For this reason i ranked him slightly above Rengoku since the latter was more balanced into a perfect mix of STR, DEX and COS.
Muichiro instead is a full max STR and DEX, but his resistance is null , making it that he is tecnically stronger than uzui and Regoku, but would die easily compared to them (in fact i don’t see him surviving against Akaza or tanking his blows like Rengoku if their places where swamped during Mugen Train arc)
This is kinda the thing i like about the pillars tho.
While there is a ranking , each of them is a specialist in specific roles. This means that their personal competences give them good chances to fare better in different matchups , like Tomioka’s defensive/parry style being perfect to stand to Akaza even if he doesn’t have the same explosive strength of Mui and Rengoku.
Or also Tengen being the best counter for Gyutarou because his poison Res and versatility

This series peaked with the second season
The power level also was more consistent because tanjiro couldn't even stand in front of the demon brother for more than 1 second without dying
Then the was soloing the upper 4 by the next season

Question. Why was Kokushibo so vastly different from every other demon in the manga? I get that he’s supposed to be Demon Kenshin, okay. But why is every other demon portrayed like a lowlife, trash, loser, or, at best, a battle maniac ruffian (Akaza)? Is it because the manga carries an essential bigotry for the samurai aesthetic so even a villain is ennobled by it? Because that’s what it feels like. He’s supposed to be a dark Kenshin — this is not controversial, he even copies Kenshin’s iconic cross-breast sword stance — but why ONLY Kokushibo gets this treatment? Even Muzan himself gets portrayed as a scumbag.

Nope, that’s absolutely false. The Hashira are barely characters, and the UMs are not characters at all. You can literally mix and match any Hashira vs UM matchup and have exactly the same result. One Hashira’s asspull will be pulled from any Hashira’s ass as needed. Gyutaro’s poison will be exactly as effective against one Hashira as any other. A UM’s weaknesses will be noticed and exploited by every Hashira, the only thing that will change is the dialogue or the specific flashback events when they come up.

Fiendishly based. Uzui is easily the coolest pillar, it's a shame he got shafted in the final arc, the three retired pillars guarding Nezuko should've gotten a 3v1 fight against a new UM.

That wasn’t a feat, it was lazy and bad writing. Koku is Demon Kenshin, so if he hits you, you’re dead or at least losing a body part. But humans can’t fight when disembowled, so the mangaka went "uhhhh….fuck it, he keeps his guts inside via willpower". Because if his guts spilled out right there Gantz-style the fight would be over and that would be the wrong outcome, but there had to be some sort of dramatic tension in this battle and doing that without the Hashira suffering hits would be too difficult to write. THe mangaka wanted a scene where Sanemi gets mortally wounded but fought on anyway because he’s that badass but failed to figure out a good way to make that happen so he just asspulled some silly bullshit, like how Insouke moves his organs around and is immune to his lungs being frozen because he’s “tough”, etc. Bad writers constantly write themselves into these corners.

Yes because Kimetsu follows a small amount of real life physics.
Huge dudes are inherently stronger than smaller dudes.
That's why Himejima is a fucking monster even without his mark and Shinobu is likely weaker than Markless Tanjiro even with her own slayer mark. (Of course exceptions like Matsuri exist but even with her condition Matsuri is just equal to the average physically fit men like Rengoku or Giyu, she is still weaker than Himejima and Tengen)
Of course the grown up guy with 3 wives would be stronger than the Teenagers and young adults.
