What I really like about older works like this one is they usually treat firearms a lot more seriously than modern stuff, which often follows Hollywood-inspired trend of "guns never work".
This, combined with how reasonable the established "power levels" are in this work, makes me think that the force Yamagishi had with him right here

It looks like both squads present on that page are equipped with shotguns, with one or two squad members wielding rifles (M16, Howa)

If instead half of them had 7.62 rifles with AP (or even sabot) rounds, and every squad had 1-2 LMGs with them - the sheer density of highly-penetrative firepower they would be able to send down that corridor would make it impossible for Goto to either dodge or deflect with his shield
