Well, depends on what you expect. The anime/manga doesn't focus on the action aspect of the story, despite having a few action moments here and there; instead, if focuses more on the human relations, the appreciation for life and its elements, that sort of thing.

That being said, it maintains a similar formula throughout the entire series, so you decided if it's to your liking or not. Personally, I like it a lot. It's kinda artsy without being annoying or full of itself.

I gave it a fair chance of 10 episodes. Then dropped.

First 4 episodes are the only ones that feel like an unique and special show before it starts to slowly devolve into a generic fantasy shonen.

I watched episode 18; dropped. Sadly, it's just shonenshit. I don't see anything "artsy" about this series, it's just slow and repetitive. I think I got all the series has to give, "don't let life pass you by, enjoy the little things."

Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, and Blue Period all gap this in terms of compelling characters and Kaguya-sama: Love is War provides the same life lesson without being a drag and doesn't have an insufferable tabula rasa of a main character, plus Kaguya-sama: Love is War is cute and funny.

Twitter troons are not normalfags, and if white supremacists resembled Frieren in any regard they'd have put themselves out of business by now. Objections to Frieren's treatment of demons come from feeling like a malignant underclass to society and thus identifying with skinwalking predators, and thus feeling personally attacked at the host fighting back.

Frieren's pov is also challenged multiple times in the manga. Those challenges fail, because the underlying nature of the thing is consistent. Demons aren't people, they just look like them to get closer to their prey. Repeatedly asking if maybe they're people after all gets you repeatedly preyed upon. Repeatedly exterminating them on sight works great if you can manage it.

Yet in chapter 72 we see a young demon actively ask for Revolte's approval, despite being unaware of any humans around, including Genau who ends up killing him. It's about an immortal all-powerful autist being pampered by her friends while reminiscing about all the social mistakes she made. This makes it the greatest thing ever to a particular segment of the audience, and kinda slow to everyone else.

Half of this is probably just bad writing. We have a demon admitting to another demon, in human speech, that demons only mimic human speech to deceive humans. We have multiple instances of demons using 'father' or 'mother' to get out of trouble, but having no idea what it means. We have assurances that demons are solitary monsters made out of mana like other monsters, but are frequently shown working together and one of their major traits is a need for social signaling. None of this works great as Frieren being wrong about demons, but it fits well with the author trying to do two things at once and not pulling it off very well.

The other half is cope. We see exactly 0 demons who aren't malicious, so even if every single member of their kind isn't entirely evil, Frieren's policy is clearly 99% great and suffers only in the extreme theoretical. The mana thing is likened to nobles wearing fancy clothes to signify their status, not morality, and Himmel's character arc is being an idealistic completionist hero who is wrong about the one demon we see him experimenting with. Demons being irredeemable doesn't contradict that any more than his triumph over the demon lord failing to bring everlasting peace to the land does. He'd have liked to pull it off, but the world doesn't really work like that, even for a legendary hero.

Himmel wanted to be heroic, so he pushed what heroism he had and ended up becoming a legendary hero. Frieren wanted to have friends, so she pushed what sentimentality she had and ended up gaining new friends and being less autistic this time around. Demons wanted to kill people, so they pushed what deception and cunning they had to blend in with their preferred prey.

Demons didn't gain friends for the same reason Frieren didn't become a public figure and Himmel didn't start hunting men for sport. They never wanted those things and had nothing in them well suited to becoming those things.

Frieren is one of the most generic and boring anime I've ever seen. I wouldn't mind if it was forgotten as it should be, since there's plenty of other unremarkable, boring fantasy shows out there, but instead an entire generation of ironic weebs have chosen to meme it as a flawless masterpiece that's inescapable in anime discussions online. I'm aware that scenes where a demon questions to another are for the audience; it's like Everyone Speaks Commons Language. It makes Doylist sense, for many it's enough. It may be intriguing to look for narrative sense, did the writer make a mistake juggling so many things at once, perhaps even then it passes. Demons are mostly solitary, but then band together if a stronger demon comes up, and the demons we see are exceptional anyhow. Even if the demon communicates with each other, it can be passed as training as said 99 times, they keep doing it to prepare in case a human does appear, out of habit, etc.
