I actually dropped JJK during the cursed womb arc. I picked it back up again when the anime dropped and I can say it needed Shibuya to really find its footing AND direction.
Before that it was all pretty vague as Yuji simply wanted to collect the fingers and die a good death, which could lead to pretty much anything. With Shibuya though it started to tighten up the plot threads and create a more engaging narrative while retaining the overall action focused style.
