he was broken OP, had more chakra then any uchiha, was the only one reaching transition level sharingan (naturally developing mangekyo sharingan) and had an IQ of 180, the only way kishimoto had to make the sasuke vs itachi fight work in some way was weakening itachi.

Huh? Everyone was fine after extracting the bijuu. Deidara and Sasori also extracted it and they could fight just fine. You're arguing Itachi has insane chakra pool because he did what everyone else was doing while also having one 30% weak clone doing his bidding. It's really nothing special.

Itachi couldn't use more than 3 MS jutsu while Sasuke was running around spamming Enton, Amaterasu and Susano for extended periods of time. He's a chakralet. He died on Susano usage. His fight against Sasuke was 1 Tsukuyomi, 1 Amaterasu and Susano for 30s. That's what got him this exhausted.

Itachi shouldn't be interpreted as a selfish villain or a selfless hero but rather as a selfless villain trying to groom Sasuke to rule the world.
He's ok with killing his family to protect Sasuke or even torturing Sasuke just to make him more powerful.
He probably thinks Sasuke is the protagonist. Imagine how pissed he'd be if he knew the series was called Naruto
