Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the twenty-fifth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping a one-shot story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theater series that came out around this time. Today, that will be "The Witch and Dinner". The scans I have of the one-shot are fan scans.

Original title was ジューンブライドの幽霊 or "The Ghost of the June Bride" or "The June Bride Ghost". Furinkan notes that: "The origin of the term "june bride" is throught to originate from the fact that the name of the month of June is taken from the Roman goddess Juno who was the goddess of marriage."

The translation here is more direct than you might think. The ghost described it as 甘く切ない which does refer to bittersweet things like nostalgia but also consists of the words 甘く (sweet) and 切ない (painful). Rinne said 甘いな。 which means as shown. While Sakura Mamiya said 切ないですね。which uses the same term 切ない to means "It's sad" (specifically painful or lonely types of sad).

The anime rearranges a lot admittedly. Since Rinne is so episodic, it'll do stuff like group random somewhat thematic chapters together that were many years apart like beach chapters or similar. Among any number of other little rearrangements. It doesn't hurt much since I'll be real with you, there isn't too much noticeable progression, but you do really see how Rumiko will introduce a character and then mess around with them for a few months when you read them in order.

Original title was ゴールドライセンス (gourudoraisensu), so a loanword from English. Both this image and the one on the volume cover have been redrawn a bit, but not by much. The top line was 死神ライセンス認定証 and RINNE ROKUDOU was written in all caps, but that's it.

I can't really read what it says on his uniform. 死 is the shi in shinigami and means death. 三 is three. I assume he's a third year. The middle symbol just looks like a bat to me. I like his shark scythe. Rumiko's scythe designs seem a bit plainer than her assistants (who do the background ones), but they hit the balance well between gaudy and simple for me.

Not sure why the anime changed it. Dwarves and little people are both reasonable localizations though they both bring to my mind images unrelated to the thing being depicted here. When it comes to these sorts of things, my first thought is the shoemaker elves in the Brothers Grimm story. Though they were apparently called wichtmenn in German.

VIZ seems unconcerned about brand names. Also, I googled it and these prices go beyond mere luxury items. One of these is almost 20 thousand dollars. Anyway, I always loved the third panel. I don't even really need the rest of the punchlines, that sold the chapter for me.

Original title was 幽霊ゴムボート (yuurei gomubouto). Apparently inflatable raft is gomu (rubber, loanword from Portuguese gum, I think?) and bouto (boat, from English).

I wonder if this cover is making fun of itself for having a bikini shot take up the entire focus or just referencing paranormal photos.

Furinkan has a helpful note here: "Initially Rinne wonders if the giant out at sea is an "umibouzu"　(海坊主, literally "sea priest"), a sea monster. Rokumon's line was apparently バブル臭がします。 which literally means "It smells like bubbles" (apparently) but refers to the Bubble Era of Japan, which was 1986-1991. 魔女とディナー (Majo to Dinaa) or "The Witch and Dinner" was published on March 5th, 2014 in Big Comic Original. As such, it was published a bit before these chapters.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. This story has four pages of color. It seems the fanscans found the original printing of the story, which is great. I also have Furinkan's scan of the original cover, with the title and everything.

This one's alright. A bit different, which is nice. Still about an older man, of course.
