Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the twenty-fifth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>281147713

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping a one-shot story from the Rumic World and Rumic Theater series that came out around this time. Today, that will be "The Witch and Dinner". The scans I have of the one-shot are fan scans.

Original title was ใ‚ธใƒฅใƒผใƒณใƒ–ใƒฉใ‚คใƒ‰ใฎๅนฝ้œŠ or "The Ghost of the June Bride" or "The June Bride Ghost". Furinkan notes that: "The origin of the term "june bride" is throught to originate from the fact that the name of the month of June is taken from the Roman goddess Juno who was the goddess of marriage."

June 4th, 2014. Author's note:
"Q: Please tell us one memory you have with your family.
A: When I was a child I used to go to the movies and see monster movies, Wakadaisho movies and other crazy movies."

Furinkan has a note: "It may sound odd when Sakura says "the wedding chapel went out of business" but it is not a church, it is a for profit business. In the west weddings are typically held at churches, but in Japan western-style weddings are instead often held at wedding halls (็ตๅฉšๅผๅ ด/kekkonshikijo) which are non-religious venues akin to a banquet hall. This is the type of location that the faceless bride is searching for."

And yes, the cafe was called "June" in English in the original panel as well.

Rumiko always wanted Rin-ne as a series to be something you can pick up a random chapter without knowing much of any of the premise or setup and enjoy. Hence, a lot of recaps. She does make some comedy out of it, but I probably was not intended to laugh at the caption box that just says "Usually".

The translation here is more direct than you might think. The ghost described it as ็”˜ใๅˆ‡ใชใ„ which does refer to bittersweet things like nostalgia but also consists of the words ็”˜ใ (sweet) and ๅˆ‡ใชใ„ (painful). Rinne said ็”˜ใ„ใชใ€‚ which means as shown. While Sakura Mamiya said ๅˆ‡ใชใ„ใงใ™ใญใ€‚which uses the same term ๅˆ‡ใชใ„ to means "It's sad" (specifically painful or lonely types of sad).

The anime rearranges a lot admittedly. Since Rinne is so episodic, it'll do stuff like group random somewhat thematic chapters together that were many years apart like beach chapters or similar. Among any number of other little rearrangements. It doesn't hurt much since I'll be real with you, there isn't too much noticeable progression, but you do really see how Rumiko will introduce a character and then mess around with them for a few months when you read them in order.

I can't really read what it says on his uniform. ๆญป is the shi in shinigami and means death. ไธ‰ is three. I assume he's a third year. The middle symbol just looks like a bat to me. I like his shark scythe. Rumiko's scythe designs seem a bit plainer than her assistants (who do the background ones), but they hit the balance well between gaudy and simple for me.

Furinkan has a name for this guy and it presumably came from this panel. Or maybe this panel as adapted by the anime, since you can't really see much here. They claim it is ่‚ฒ่”ตๆฅไธ– which would be appropriate, since ๆฅไธ– means afterlife or next life and if you pronounce ่‚ฒ่”ต, it comes out as "ikuzo" which means "Let's go". So, basically, his name would be "Let's go to the next life" which is what he is doing.

Furinkan said that: "In the original manga chapter Annette calls Abel, Achille and Adam ๅฐไบบ (kobato). Basically "little people". In the anime adaptation she specifically calls them ๅฆ–็ฒพ (yosei/fairies). In the original they are merely called "little people" perhaps intending them to be more akin to the small folk found in Mary Norton's 1952 novel The Borrowers. This is the likely influence given the alliterative names of the novels (The Borrowers Afield (1955), The Borrowers Afloat (1959), The Borrowers Aloft (1961), and The Borrowers Avenged (1982)), the triple A names of the characters in this story, and the fact that Studio Ghibli had released The Secret World of Arrietty which had been released in 2010 and was adapted from The Borrowers as well."

Not sure why the anime changed it. Anyway, I'm not sure if Rumiko was directly referencing that as these sort of little helper spirit things appear in tons of European mythologies and are called by a lot of names. Dwarves and little people are both reasonable localizations though they both bring to my mind images unrelated to the thing being depicted here. When it comes to these sorts of things, my first thought is the shoemaker elves in the Brothers Grimm story. Though they were apparently called wichtmenn in German.

It is just French for "chocolate cake". I don't think it is even a specific dish. I guess it might be in Japan to clarify that it is not American chocolate cake. It is written as ใ‚ฌใƒˆใƒผใ‚ทใƒงใ‚ณใƒฉ (gatoushokora) in Japanese and here, so it is a loanword from French.

Furinkan has a helpful note here: "Initially Rinne wonders if the giant out at sea is an "umibouzu"ใ€€(ๆตทๅŠไธป, literally "sea priest"), a sea monster. Traditionally these are depicted as massive silhouettes out at sea. The umibouzu will typically ask for a bucket or barrel in order to dump water on sailors it finds out at sea until it drowns them. Giving the creature a bottomless bucket that cannot hold water will confuse it and allow sailors to escape."

Rokumon's line was apparently ใƒใƒ–ใƒซ่‡ญใŒใ—ใพใ™ใ€‚ which literally means "It smells like bubbles" (apparently) but refers to the Bubble Era of Japan, which was 1986-1991. So, VIZ might've turned a gag into something a bit more straightforward. And yeah, more great swimsuits. The hair and earrings seem particularly evocative of that time period in Japan's fashion industry.

้ญ”ๅฅณใจใƒ‡ใ‚ฃใƒŠใƒผ (Majo to Dinaa) or "The Witch and Dinner" was published on March 5th, 2014 in Big Comic Original. As such, it was published a bit before these chapters.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. This story has four pages of color. It seems the fanscans found the original printing of the story, which is great. I also have Furinkan's scan of the original cover, with the title and everything.

This one's alright. A bit different, which is nice. Still about an older man, of course.

Furinkan notes that: "Yoshino Shinjo (็œŸๆก็พŽไนƒ) is written with kanji meaning "true article" and "beauty""

I also notice that while presumably the furigana say Shinjo, if you read the first character with kunyomi, it is Majo which is pronounced presumably like witch. Admittedly, this is just speculation on my part. I don't know if this sort of mixed reading is intended.

seems Don't Cry Hara-chan (or ๆณฃใใชใ€ใฏใ‚‰ใกใ‚ƒใ‚“) was a tv drama
and My World (็งใฎไธ–็•Œ) was the opening theme which was sung by a children's choir
