They were more well known and more popular in the past, but they never stopped getting made. Its just the, as the internet fractured and the anime community became decentralized, awareness of them just got lost in the shuffle.
AMVs are a high-effort creative project that takes weeks or months ot perfect a 3 minute video with painstaking editting. Modern search and promotional algorithms don't reward that, they reward some twat on camera making a video every 1-2 days is usually just reacting to something that someone else said or did or made. This is true to the point that, and people have proved this, if you type the actual full name of a video into youtube you are more likely to get drowned in remixes and reactions to that video than you are for youtube to actually show you what you searched for within the first page of results.

I am still making AMVs. There's a lot of contests at conventions and I happen to go to some of those. Sitting in a room or a hall even and watching AMVs with an audience is pretty fun and you ensure they actually get watched.

But they are niche, and not rewarded by the current internet meta.

Speaking of official amv there was an amv for the rebuild of evangalion 2.0 that mixed scences from 2.0 and 1.0 using utada hikaru beautiful world according to Wikipedia it aired on TV it was on youtube but it was deleted I searched for it for 8 years and found it in yandex only for my phone to be stolen when I searched for it on yandex again the entire site has turned to YouTube mirror and the video was nowhere to be found
