Excellent early volumes, then a grueling tournament arc that practically stalls the story for most of the series, then relief as the tournament arc ends and the story's finale picks up considerably. Vilma's backstory in the middle of the tournament arc is an island of high quality storytelling amidst all the bullshit.

It's really hard to recommend as it is, so stick with it only if you really liked the original series and are invested enough to continue onto Mars Chronicles afterwards.

The tone and delivery in Mars Chronicles had fans split, a lot of them couldn't stomach Kishiro's narrative decisions here (more brutalized kids, Alita's true origins etc). The series basically loves to try and mindfuck you.

That said, objectively it's good. It goes off on the occasional little tangent, but not to any great detriment of the overall story, which remains solid throughout. Good worldbuilding, good characters, great atmosphere, brilliant art etc. IMO it's worth it, if only just.

The early chapters are kind of a slog, but it's pure kino later on. Just push through the first couple of chapters and enjoy the weird over the top ride as the story unfolds.

I think its = the original, even despite the tourney arc. Kishi clearly got tired of Alita and wanted to write some other shit for a while, so we get lots of screentime for supporting characters and outright subplots (like Vilma) but they're generally actually good and memorable and not just filler. Really only the space karate dudes overstay their welcome, relative to their actual story importance.

That said, it's very different than the original. Less grounded and gritty, plays with more high-concept scifi ideas, more cartoony. Which is all somewhat justified seeing as it's not really the original Gally doing any of it.

I prefer it to Mars Chronicle, and Mars Chronicle is pretty damn good. It goes back to being gritty as fuck, but is one long divergance/backstory arc. Feels like he's ready to finish the story now that it's done which is cool though.

I like it but it's hard to recommend it for reasons people have stated.
Mars is better but Alita/Gally is mostly a non-character, there's a lot more violence and suffering, and your enjoyment will depend on if you think Erica did nothing wrong or not

It's a different kind of story, but I think it's just as great, the world origins flashback might be even better than the original series. Although the tournament part is pretty divisive.

Now Mars Chronicles, how can I even say it?

>>281270815
>occasional little tangent
7 out 10 volumes is flashbacks mostly centered on Alita's rival and rival's mentor story. Also it ends really abruptly and we're waiting for a sequel now.

Come on, Kishiro really went balls deep showing what a miserable place space is, especially for kids. The world building really is strongest and most consistent part of the whole franchise.

It's probably because I read it all after it completed serialization but I'm surprised by the amount of hate it's getting in this thread.
It's a fine sequel that's all over the place and ultimately doesn't come together in a satisfactory manner in the end but it's worth reading mainly for the fights once you reach the Zott tournament and world-building. The scope is intergalactic empires scale now and that gets really fucking weird.
I definitely prefer the side characters in LO over the original even if they're not as emotional investing.

What I like about LO is that it isn't intergalactic, he keeps his space setting to the few planets we could realistically travel to in a few hundred years.

Battle Angel Alita_ Last Order - Vol.14 Ch.87 - Declaration of Independence - 24-25
>>281269948 (OP)
Disregard filtered shitposters. Last Order is amazing and i like it even better than Hyper Future Vision.
Yes, it's weird and the start takes a while to get used, much like the new cast and everything that changes from OG to LO. Likewise, the pacing isn't as great as OG, there are definetely some slow parts (the vampires arc is the hard filter), but once it gets going, it never fucking stops and becomes hype and beyond. And Gally's character has some very good development as she faces her past and comes to terms with her future. And a plethora of very likeable secondary characters (Sechs, my man) and villains (Mbadi, Zekka)
A little spoiler but if you read the original ending LO is a more roundabout way to get there but with extra extra world building.
Desu one of, if not, my favorite stories ever. The end of the ZoTT is legendary.

It's mostly more of the same, except for an unusually long flashback about how important x-men vampires are to the setting. Not spoilering it because others have already mentioned it and frankly I think it's better to warn people so there's less whiplash. Mars Chronicles has some gothic horror as well (arguably more) but it's integrated into the setting better.
