What went wrong with Clear Card?

You can guess how low CCS's sales are from Kadokawa's financial report, because CCS's main consumer group is also otaku, the same as Kadokawa's franchise, and there is even a commercial competitive relationship between CCS and Kadokawa's franchise.

The design of clow cards is innovative and refined while clear cards are literal mishmash of people and things around Sakura, appearing in card form and looking bland.

The new characters are uninspiring and mundane with no special characteristics, especially Akiho.

The story is coherent yet dark but imo it's better than Sakura arc. However there were too many boring fillers in S1 which in turn made the story fall flat. Hence a S2 prodcution is hardly warranted.

The issue with Clear Card is that it was unneeded, as the story had a solid ending. It didn't need anything else, unless they wanted to connect it to TRC/TWC, which they didn't.

It's not as good as the original in terms of SoL, but you are lying if you say you didn't enjoy Gravitation shenanigans or the more involved plot.

As for Akiho, she is cute, apparently not very well liked but I'm fine with her. I certainly want to see what they intend to do with that much setup. They better have a good answer to why they keep saying she is similar to Sakura, what's that book she is "deciphering" and obviously what's with attempting to steal Sakura's magic key, and how she became powerful enough to beat somebody like Sakura while asleep in the first place

It has an almost perfect premise for a sequel:

It makes perfect sense lorewise but the execution fell flat. The cards and new characters weren’t interesting and most relationships status quo'd. It's a shame, honestly but the original show will stay classic forever so who cares.

We should (re)watch the original together sometimes. It's been nearly 30 years already.

This outfit is really good and genuinely one of my favorites among magical girl costumes. I hate that she only wears it in the first OP.
Should have been used for the respective final battles of the Clow-hen and Sakura-hen, and possibly the second movie (very kino one btw).

I'm just stating the facts. CCS's sales are dismal, unless you truly believe that CCS's sales are greater than those of Kadokawa Group's top ten franchises.

Madhouse prioritizes Overlord over CCS, and Kadokawa's financial report shows Overlord only making 450 million yen (from copyright licensing, merchandise sales, Gacha sales, BD and DVD sales, light novel sales, and manga sales).

During the same period, Precure earned 2.851 billion yen. You can imagine the situation at CCS, whose sales are even more dismal than Overlord's.

One could argue that this is a problem with clear card overall: characters seem sort of frozen in an exaggerated state of themselves.

The costumes wants to be used, want to be seen, want to play out their ROLE. As such, every costume has not only a power theme, but a 'scenario' or personality or story type that it is built around/Tomoyo had in mind when making it.
The most reliable way to draw out the costume and capture it is to set up the type of situation that it was made for. It won't be able to resist making an appearance.
The camera is how you capture them, instead of clow cards. But Tomoyo and the costume both need to be in the 'shot' for it to work, so she needs a third party to do the recording for her.

CLAMP clearly didn’t know what to do with some of them, and it didn’t help that it was published in Nakayoshi, a shoujo magazine for young girls, so they couldn’t explore more mature themes either. I’m starting to think this is why Sakura and Syaoran don’t show any physical intimacy other than hugs or holding hands, despite being in a relationship for a couple of years.
