It's not about that, it's about the fact that Naruto is the most iconic anime, will there ever be another series as iconic and representative of the medium as a whole?
And more than that, Naruto has a lot of mass appeal, a lot of content, it's an epic and easily accessible, most anime lacks both of these things.

Naruto had a massive drop in quality when Shippuden started, yet it somehow lingered on for another decade just off of the strength of its opening arcs.

It is the perfect first anime. Due to it having over 700 episodes they will veer off into other genres for multiple episodes or an arc at a time, making it a good sampler pack of anime trends of the 2000s and early 2010s. If you like the ninja academy elements of it you might seek out anime that focus exclusively on slice of life, and so on. People compare Naruto to other contemporary battle shounens like One Piece or Bleach, but I think structurally it has more in common with Gintama than with Dragon Ball.

Additionally, these numbers come from Japanese netflix numbers, where Japanese viewers watch broadcast anime as they broadcast (that's why Seven Deadly Sins was so high, it was only shown on Netflix so anyone watching it would be getting Netflix for it and it's incredibly long).

Additionally, every one (1) person who watches all of Naruto contributes roughly 300 hours to its total. That's why it's so high.

i've never watched Naruto either. For me, I was so into ONEPIECE (starting 20 years ago) and Naruto was THE direct rival of ONEPIECE that i just never bothered with it.
But I did watch the very first episode of Naruto a couple years ago and was very surprised how shamelessly open Naruto was on girls and I thought that was really refreshing. For once the main boy character wasn't an autistic retard likke Luffy and Goku.
This thread though is really making me want to start Naruto. There are a lot of my favorite seiyuus in it. I just never ever got into it. I also remember being conciously salty that despite ONEPIECE being absolutely huge in Japan, Naruto always came out on top on the Western site.
