This cartoon is a waste of Kyoani's talents. Their other works look vastly better. Even Nichijou looks better than this.

Since y'all are posting a lot of cutouts with super aliased, ugly edges, I'll share a trick I've learned for better transparencies: cut one pixel into the lineart with your cutout (do the cutout manually with pen/paths tool or polygonal lasso instead of with something like magic wand or magnetic lasso - trying to take shortcuts with this is what creates those ugly, aliased edges), then do a 1 pixel outer glow (photoshop/photopea)/drop shadow (gimp) filter on the layer, set to the same color as the lineart.
Then check your work by paint bucketing white and black behind it. You can get them fairly flawless/seamless this way. Pic related.

use layer masks. add an alpha layer mask with full white, then draw black where you want to remove. you can still use the selection tool to get large areas, then color inside of them black, and if there are any parts you messed up, you can paint them white/black in the mask to fix

that's a horrible explanation but just youtube search "gimp layer mask" and you'll find something. the word "layer" is important because if you search "gimp masks" though you'll get a bunch of unrelated results

sometimes, especially with anime and cartoons, it's easy to use the magic selection tool to get the inside of the character you want, you the "grow selection by..." feature to grow it by however many pixels will account for the character outlines, press crtl-i to invert the selection, and use that to mask away the background.

you can also try using the blur filter on the mask itself to fade the edges which can be useful when the source material has the lines bleed into the background and you don't want to to capture that bleeding in your crop
