how did it have such a chokehold on a generation that it's touted as one of the best anime series of all time? the core drama was driven by fatal character dynamics and the emotional turmoil that ensued, but is that really enough to skyrocket to thee top?

Because westerners watched shonen like Naruto/DBZ/Sailor Moon and they didn't see mecha like Zeta Gundam before.

As a result, a borderline mecha-anime with permadeaths seemed greatly appealing to them

It had a unique setting, great production value and a mystery on top of that. Not to mention that military animes are rare outside of mecha
