Why do so few shows feature an MC who reciprocates female affection in a non retarded way? Over the top shyness, meme tier relationship, ironic comedic relationships, harems, melodramatic relationships. Not even Miyazaki despite all his whinging about things wrong with the industry gets this right. Essentially 0 good romantic anime.

It's 99% picrel goonsquad stuff.

those things can be fun and interesting, but even if you are completely allergic to all of them for some reason there are plenty of series without it, just watch more anime

A town where you live had a pretty childish MC but he was surprisingly ballsy.
I never heard of it and started binging it yesterday.

You talk as if Miyazaki has ever written good characters.

I have quite literally lost count when it comes to shows watched. And I am not trying to say I don't enjoy those shows, I do. But I wouldn't mind having one genuinely solid romance anime about a somewhat grounded non melodramatic non teenangst relationship between properly fleshed out characters. I can think of about two (2) of the top of my head that aren't utterly meme tier on the romance aspect.

I could recommend a bit of Manga but with anime is much harder, writers can't find a good balance.

Here is the only recomemendation can give on top of my head also is 5 am so I am not correcting these typos.

It's a hell of a rollercoaster but at least the MC isn't a shitty herbivore.

My bad, I did not mean to imply that. I don't actually like his work, his style or his characters. Thematically he is extremelly dull and all themes he explores have been explored in far more depth and detail by western and russian artists. I also believe his opinions on a plethora of topics to be garbage.

To be fair this is one if the few times I actually agree with OP and the problem is not in "just watch more shows". Anime is great for action, it is great for silly/meme-y OTT -dere focussed shows (Shana, Yuno, Krisu, Taiga etc.), it is great for whacky mix&mash "only in anime" stuff like kill la kill, madoka, bakenonkgatari, it is however absolutely garbage at doing regular humans having regular relationships. Anno with Eva is one of the few shows to actually do anything remotely close to genuine relationships that are not paper-dimensional, but it goes of the deep end with the depression (and kills of any exploration of romantic themes)

What does "meme tier" or "melodramatic" mean to you though? Is something like Bunny Girl Senpai off the table because it has supernatural drama in it? It has a non-shy MC and a straightforward romance, but they respond (appropriately) dramatically to a dramatic situation.
What about something more cutesy like Aharan-san or Giji Harem?
How about Horimiya?

I think sweeping generalizations about the entire medium like this are most often a product of ignorance or being hypercritical. It sounds extremely arrogant to me when someone says every anime and manga writer is garbage at romance.

I mean more the relationships just being meme tier (e.g. anything yandere, ye its fun, but its fun because its 110% memes) or melodramatic (e.g. something along the lines of clannad, laying it on silly thick purely for an emotional response).

I said anime, there is so much more manga out there that I can't possibly say the same for manga. Feel free to prove me wrong though, even the very best romance anime I can think of are still pretty meh that don't so anything remotely interesting when it comes to exploring the dynamics between characters, their relationship and how it develops.

My man, I too wish for 2D bunnyeared characters and the like to be real, but IRL what is portrayed in that show does not happen in any shape or form other than possibly for late Hugh Heffner.

You sound like someone who has never watched it that assumes the bunny girl costume is a core aspect of her character, it's not.
Nobody is arguing that show is true to life, it has a supernatural element, but OP was talking about romances that aren't treated like memes, so that ought to qualify. If we're going to throw out every anime that has any aspect of non-realism in it, then yes the list will be shorter, but even so the other 3 that you're ignoring in that list should qualify.

Got to make Japanese boys effeminate enough for the upcoming Third World invasion that's happening right now. We can't have them being even a bit aggressive, or else they won't be able to welcome ten million doctors and scholars to their country every year.

Not OP, like the suggestions, a shame they are all highschool stuff though that don't really have too much complexity to the relationships. I think horimiya is probs the best.
@OP, something like Blue Valentine, i.e. a deep dive into a complex romantic relationship, is not something you're going to find in anime, at least not without it being wrapped in a goofy melodrama story (example: darling in the Franx)

Anonymous No.281312377 [Report]

You have to resort to shoujo for the emotionally more realistic anime with stronger male characters. Too bad you are then faced with nearly the opposite problem, of the female characters being damsels in distress being rescued by ripped Dracula 9000 abs of steel requiring just a quick suck and then promises sweet sweet love (that being said, call of the night flips this concept tipsytopsyturvy)

He ain't wrong, anime is shit at romance, you can name maybe half a dozen shows that aren't utter garbage at portraying a "real" love relationship, the rest is wish fullfillment, and/or has the emotional depth of a puddle in the Sahara.

I will stand by my opinion that Bleach, in part due to it having many many episodes, does this better than most other anime. Yes it has a lot of shitty filler arcs, but it is done airing so you can just skip those, over the many remaining episodes there is enough screentime for you to actually get invested in the relationships.

There is also a show that I can't remember the name of (plastic life, maybe?) About automatons that are life like and companions, but have a limited lifespan before going funny (blade runner style), but in the short time she and her carer develop a relationship and then have to deal with it ending. Which I thought was surprisingly good and covered genuine loss (something not really done a lot in anime).

It's a marketing problem. It is why we have 99 marvel capeshit movies to every 1 movie that had an iota of effort put in. Marvelshit is simply copy lasting an existing story with existing bigboob women and washboard men characters, and existing fanbase onto film, guaranteed success. Other stuff tends to be riskier.
Anime no different.

The problem is rather the reverse people deluding themselves into thinking they aren't simply watching slop entertainment. I never understand why that is so hard to accept, unless you have made anime a core part of your identity or so. Burger King and McDees is shit food, I still enjoy it every so often. Anime same deal, entertainment for salarymansalary man to enjoy after coming home, dished up in bitesized 24min episodes. Heck, I wouldn't even watch the shit OP is asking for even if it existed why the fuck would I want to watch real life shit in my anime? What a retarded thing to want to begin with. Thought provoking anime sure, but not the mundanity of IRL relationships in anime, I have IRL relationships IRL, I'd watch soapslop and reality TV if I wanted to have more of IRL life during TV time.

This. TTGL, P&S and S&W are remembered nearly 2 decades down the line, and it has nothing to do with realism or great depictions of human love interests, it has everything to do with it being bonkers exaggerated fun.

Honestly, my bar's so low for male leads in romance series that I consider them masterwork characters if they simply avoid being beta self-inserts. Like, I still fondly remember Niiya Teiichi just because he was proactive and stepped up when he needed to.
