The early part in this episode had a lot of skipping really. Like Lydia's brother Richard being a proper character and not a background prop. And Allen sparring with Lydia to cool her off (this is probably just too heavy a burden on a production that has already used a recap episode).

Gerard was proctor for Allen's court magician exam, which he started by insulting Lydia, Caren, and Allen's parents.

In return, Allen dismantled every spell Gerard had, then completely trounced him in swordplay, too. However, most of the order members are wusses totally scared of the aristocratic faction, so the refused to grade Allen's tour de force, which brought about the exam failure.

This is the biggest ommision from Novels in Anime so far, but I am spoilering it as I think the scriptwriter may still want to include this, just in the next big battle, especially that they skipped Allen and Lydia sparring... or flirting with swords and spells, if you prefer Anna the Leinster Head Maid's point of view.
