Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Saturday and I am gonna post the twenty-sixth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>281257014

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

Original title was ใ‚ญใƒฃใƒณใƒ—ๅ ด่’ใ—. ใ‚ญใƒฃใƒณใƒ— (kyanpu) is a loanword from the English "camp".

Rokumon, hehe. The original line referred was "ใ“ใ€ใ“ใ‚ŒใŒ้‡‘ๆŒใกใฎ้‡Žๅฎฟโ€ฆ". I don't know if the original joke was the same as the localized one or if Rokumon is so unfamiliar with the concept of camping that he actually thinks of it as "rich person's sleeping outside".

I do like the way this thing is drawn. Also, the narration here seems to imply they washed the clay out or something? Either that, or it was mistranslated. The original line was "BBQใฏใ‚ใจใง็พŽๅ‘ณใ—ใใ„ใŸใ ใใพใ—ใŸใ€‚" Either way, I guess we aren't to dwell on it.

The assignment here was ไพไปฃ่ฆณๅฏŸ or Yorishiro observation. Yorishiro has come up before and has been localized in a number of different ways, usually referring to the yorishiro dolls as channeling dolls. Anyway, I have a note from Furinkan, but I can also just post the definition of yorishiro from JapanDict: "object representative of a divine spirit, object to which a spirit is drawn or summoned, object or animal occupied by a kami". Anyway, here's Furinkan's note:

"Yorishiro (ไพไปฃ) references an object that a spirit is drawn to dwell in."

I love this chapter. The original title is ็™พ็‰ฉ่ชž (hyakumonogatari). This can be translated as "A Hundred Supernatural Tales" or "100 Ghost Stories" or similar, but it is itself a set phrase and refers to the Hyakumonogatari Kaidankai, which is basically a spooky parlor game created in the Edo period of Japan. Wikipedia has an article about it, but basically, it is a game where players each tell scary stories and after each one, they blow out a candle (out of 100). It is referenced in all kinds of stuff and has cultural significance. I can see what VIZ was doing with their localization, since they both refer to very similar activities done at camp or sleepovers.

This cover was originally in full color.

Oh. Well, whatever, the information is here too. Thank you, Rumiko. This panel did originally refer specifically to ็™พ็‰ฉ่ชž rather than the more vague "telling ghost stories". I also think VIZ added the "sometimes".

I will say I disagree with translating "ๆ€ช็•ฐ" as "ghoul" though I can sort of see where they are coming from. When it is used as a noun, it can mean "mystery", "strangeness", "monstrosity" or it can mean "ghost", "monster, "phantom", "goblin", etc. I would've gone with a more literal "strange thing" or "oddity" or something.

>>281329987
Yeah, less than stellar drawing. Though a lot of manga panels cheat when it comes to that since we usually stick to 3/4s perspective for faces.

End of chapter. Sorry, Bijin... I do love the way Rumiko drew her face. Furinkan notes that: ""Her sister's face is as blank as a Noh mask." - Noh (่ƒฝ) is the oldest theatrical style that is still in active use today. It was originated in the 8th century and makes use of a number of masks that the actors wear." Also, VIZ went with "fell into the dark side again" which is not unreasonable, but it was "ใพใŸๆ‚ชใฎไธ–็•Œใซ" which appears to mean "back into the world of evil".

Original title is ้ฆ–็”ท. The translation here is accurate, but as Furinkan notes: "The anime translates his name as "Head Man" while the manga translation uses "Neck Man". This is because in Japanese he is called "Kubi Otoko" and "kubi" can be translated as either "head" or "neck"." I can only assume it stems from the fact that when you decapitate something, you get both.

Her undeniably a creep, but not that kind of creep. Annette said "ๆ‚ชใ„ๅญใญใˆ~" in the second panel here. I assume this turn of phrase isn't as sexualized as it can be in English, but I have no clue.

The text in the first panel wasn't redrawn. I assume the bit of pizzazz was to make it seem a bit more spell-like. The Japanese text for the bottom panel had the a pronunciation guide of Furigana for the French, the French itself and the Japanese translation of the meaning.

End of chapter, end of volume. Sorry, pal.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Wednesday to dump Volume 27 of Rin-ne. In addition, I will be dumping the Rumic one-shot "Came the Mirror" in that thread. I should've technically done it in this thread given when it came out, but I messed up. Again. I will see you next Wednesday! Thanks for reading.

furinkan calls it "someday he'll get you" but i'm pretty sure i saw it also translated as "someday he'll get me"?
i mentioned shabake in a previous thread, it's not translated but a few pages (but not all) are visible in the free preview for the tribute anthology volume it was compiled in
