Hate for her has considerably lessened over the years.

Fat boy never really interacted with her or matured until she left him as his partner. Honestly if you go back and watch those earlier episodes you'll see he just took for granted, she was his comfort and nothing else. A constant presence in his spoiled shallow life he never understood the real value of until she was gone.

In the end all she did was remind everyone that even though some girls seem pleasant and nice, inside they still want what they want and will cause chaos to get it. If Darling came out like 4-5 years earlier than the original airdate the studio would be literally bombed.

The point of her character was that she was an agreeable coward, who'd just go along with what everyone else wanted, and say yes to anything, so she wouldn't create any conflicts. However, when she found that book and learned about motherhood, she gained the courage to speak up and act on her convictions, despite still being timid.

Turns out that sixteen wasn't a protagonist at all, and had absolutely no agency in the entire series.

People really struggle to separate the description of narrative events and the intent of the filmmakers (or anime directors/mangaka) with how they portray those events.
There are tons of examples in all of media where a perfectly reasonable narrative is portrayed in a mean spirited way by the director.

Lardass wasn’t even the most pitied or miserable person in the story. Dyke lost her youth and is aging rapidly to die alone, well deserved desu. Ichigo is way more cucked, her humiliation is dragged on throughout the story because she can’t get MC’s attention like BPD Alien slut can. Also, Goro is pining after her down the wing so he’s also a top candidate. It’s just that fatso is portrayed in a comical way, making it seem more pathetic.
