Oda has always drawn all sorts of characters with the logic that even in real life, people look vastly different. It's just exaggerated to cartoonish levels in One Piece. In real life, we can't feasibly exaggerate people's sizes and bodies in the same way as it's done in One Piece. Instead the most logical way to represent the differences between people is to cast people of all sorts of ethnicities, genders etc. This alone is, in my opinion, enough of a reason, but it's also worth noting that the Live Action version isn't made to appeal to people who watch anime. Anyone interested in anime and One Piece have already watched the One Piece anime. This is for the "normies", and they see this sort of diversity as a good thing 99% of the time. You forget that /a/ exists in a bubble that isn't reflective of reality.
