It is one of few manga without a dogshit ending.
Most of the other main stream series may have better main storylines, but they fail massively in the ending. E.g., bleach, naruto, billy bat, toriko.
FMA delivers a nice story that does not jump the shark.
It is the sheer lack of quality of everything else that makes of FMA an all time classic

It was the perfect shonen. It opened up a lot of western audiences who grew up on animations of cat chasing mouse to the kind of deep intense and mature story telling that is possible with animation. It's main success is that it perfects a well known formula and is mostly flawless.
