I love FKMT and wouldn't change a thing about any of his works but why does he draw like this? His art style doesn't feel like one you stumble into by accident. Has he ever spoken or written about it?

That's something the real Gai would say to be defiant and would amuse Hirata reassuring him Gai is in good hands.

The entire plan is doomed to fail, Sawai is just desperate. Outside of the real Gai, at best a perfect look-alike that's in a coma, lobotomized or dead would do the trick.

I was referring more to Sawai's plan of fooling Hirata. As long as Gai eludes him until Hirata arrives, the latter will demand to see Gai and Sawai can't produce the real one before him.
Escaping is a different matter. Gai said it's good that Hirata came personally, so maybe he has a plan.

Someone posted a quote from an interview of his in an old thread. It was along the line of "I'm bad at drawing but I know how to write" or something of the sort.
He probably tried to emulate the popular style at the time, failed and then shifted to his own. As time went on he got better until he reached his current style. It also helps that he knows how to utilise it to give the intended effect in his manga.
