It's not really.
It's *okay* though. Stories with time travel half to walk a razor's edge where on one side they go in too much detail and create too many plot holes because it fundamentally doesn't make sense most of the time, and on the other they are too vague and the rules just manifest themselves at the convenience of the plot and as such it ends up also not making sense.
Takopi ends up a little on the latter side of that. You can get through vague rules if you can out-vibe the issue which it almost does but not quite there. A tiny bit more setup of memories crossing timelines dotted throughout the series would have gone a long way, and episode 6 probably should have been another 45 minute episode.
I still really liked it, but there are things I'd change. I'm only being fussy because it's good anyway.

The ending is not one, but 3 Deus Ex Machina in succession.

I watched this yesterday, it's good until the "future Marina" plot twist, then it goes to the shitter. I ended the series thinking that maybe they went out of budget and had to wrap up quickly (and that's also the reason it's 6 episodes instead of the usual 12) only to learn that it's a manga.

So no excuses, this is very badly written

>Yeah, let's be friends with your bully over a fucking octopus doodle!

There's no natural evolution and conclusion to the conflict between Marina and Shizuka. They could've solved the problem on their own terms by realizing they have things in common or something, but no.

Also, reminder that in her "untouched" timeline, Marina drives Shizuka to suicide too (only that she fails because the rope breaks).

There is absolutely nothing to this anime. It is completely devoid of a message or intention ("hurr people can be good and bad" is not a message), it's just misery porn for the sake of being edgy and "groundbreaking"
Anonymous No.281375911 >>281376388

I agree, but I do like the future marina twist in theory, it just doesn't come together at the end. They really needed more of a concrete resolution of Shizuku/Marina. The bad stuff Shizuku did didn't actually happen in the timeline we end up in - the bad stuff Marina did WAS in our timeline.

Shizuka never did anything bad in any timeline until Takopi kills Marina. Then she goes full psycho and starts manipulating Azuma (the boy) and wanting to kill everyone until she gets her dog.

So in both timelines, Shizuka is a bullying victim because of her literal whore of a mother has Marina's father as a client, and Marina's mother abuses and sets her daughter to bully Shizuka to get her revenge.

In the timeline Marina meets Takopi, she also bullied Shizuka to the point of making her attempt suicide. But because she didn't have Takopi's ribbon, the rope broke and she didn't die. Then she left the town, and returned 6 years later to go to highschool. In this time, Azuma's still abused by his mother and has a pretty shitty life, and he develops a crush on Shizuka because he has some kind of Oedipus complex and Shizuka reminds him of his mother.

In the timeline(s) Shizuka meets Takopi she's already the victim of bullying for the same reason. In one loop she kills herself because she has Takopi's ribbon, but this goes exactly as it went in the original Marina timeline, except she dies.

So the bad Marina's bad stuff was in both main timelines, Shizuka's bad stuff was only in ONE and because of Takopi's extreme fuckup and after over 9000 loops.

Also, how the fuck does Takopi come back from Tokyo to Hokkaido when he's hit by Shizuka under that bridge? Why does Marina have memories of him if she met him when she was 15 in another timeline? Why does Azuma have friends now just because he fought with his brother in the timeline where Takopi doesn't exist (which would be the same as the Marina timeline because Takopi never had the oportunity to tell him yo fight with his brother because, well, he doesn't fucking exist)

In a story with time travel you will always have some plot holes or paradoxes at best, but this one was very lazily resolved.

The girls even continue living their shitty lives, with Marina's mother still stiring shit up and cutting faces

My theory is that Marina only provoked Chappy into attacking her because Takopi intervened and kept helping Shizuka, which made Marina mental. My theory is that, if Takopi hadn't come to earth, the mother would have put Chappy down anyway because the neighbours were complaining about the barking. (Shizuka mentions she couldn't stop Chappy barking in the last episode.) But the suicide attempt (without Takopi to lend the ribbon) would have failed. Still Shizuka would have been rescued from neglect and everyone would blame Marina's bullying for the suicide attempt and Marina would become a pariah in middle and high school.

>he develops a crush on Shizuka because he has some kind of Oedipus complex
Azuma had an eye on her in elementary school, was repeatedly offering his help to her when she was bullied etc. We don't know what extent he helped in the Marina's Takopi timeline, but Shizuka moved out of town, moved back, teen boy remembers childhood girl he was vaguely involved with and who has now become more beautiful, of course he falls in love.

>how the fuck does Takopi come back from Tokyo to Hokkaido when he's hit by Shizuka under that bridge?
He can fly across galaxies? Though the way he was shown struggle to move around earlier when worrying about Shizuka undermines it a bit. But that had a narrative reason to walk, replicating the trope of going to check on someone. Maybe he saves his magic travel only to when absolutely needed? This is a very small detail

>Why does Azuma have friends now just because he fought with his brother in the timeline where Takopi doesn't exist
vague memories from past lives/timelines is an established time travel trope, so the lesson he swore by to have more fights transferred to that timeline. Also, having one crucial fight can change a lot due to butterfly effect. Just like how at the ending he decides to walk away from Shizuka because of the other guys fawning over his PS4 so hard.

Also explains Marina and Shizuka as kids connecting over something stupid and insignificant turning in to a friendship, the message of that is that people (especially kids) are closer to each other than you think. Though this is the criticism I agree the most with, it's still too abrupt and rushed to turn a (seemingly) long-term bullying into friendship. Though also, they only show that moment of connection and not the entire development, she might still on-off bully and be friends with her. This actually happened with my bullying in elementary school.

I didn't give a shit about the family drama on Happy Planet, but I did feel for his reactions to events on Earth, how he learned the part where he cried as Marina's clone about killing her, and the part where he tried to plead to Shizuka and she didn't care, and and how he was being used like a punching bag and gadget dispenser most of the time.
Anonymous No.281387688
>>281383189
Yes, more likely. Though I don't think Takopi was low effort at all, it had 3 very different type of kids and complex family drama. If it was low effort it would be just 1 little girl being abused 6 episodes straight.

Though there are tons of low effort anime genres like having bunch of high school girls with huge boobs (or flat if you prefer that), and we still enjoy and appreciate them. To avoid this accusation you'll have to make a story about living rocks on mars and explore the culture of martian rocks or something. But that's absurd. Human themes appeal to human emotions.
