I mean, I'm even older. I was in AonE.
I watched Haruhi just to know what's it about.
I watched Madoka in the same vein.
And Evangelion was so snore inducing I never finished, Rahxephon was still meh but better, and Star Driver blew them all out of the water. But that's my opinion, other anons might disagree.

It's the same for me. Each season I give many shows a shot, then quickly drop what didn't draw me.
If I see a show making waves and it's not snore-inducing, I'll watch just to be on top of things.
More often than not I get shows I like despite them being something completely new.
To give example, this season I didn't PLAN to watch Koujo Denka no Kateikyoshi or Chinmoku no Majo, and I'm enjoying both. I also pushed my buyfag priviledge and gotten all the volumes of Koujo Denka... in volume 5 right now and the novel is even better than anime; even when anime is a very decent adaptation anyway.
It's always like this for me.
