I think it's about wanting the thing they like to be validated and not seen as childish so realistic is inherently better.
Also I thought comics have many more roles (not necessarily number of people) working on one piece of work than a manga, which at most has an editor, writer, artist and assistants. Maybe that's just how it works at the big companies? Manga has a lot more monthly or less frequency publications than weekly, which is very competitive, and because artists pay out of their own pocket for assistants, there are actually quite a few that work with minimal or no assistants if they can make their schedule on their own.
