When literally anything happens at all. Name one anime that isn't philosphical.

Hint: you can't.

When it makes an actual philosophical point, which Madoka Magica didn't.

Madoka, along with most anime, don't say anything actually philosophical. I liked the themes of Faustian bargains, (emotional) fatalism, systemic oppression, Christ-like self-sacrifice, etc; but none of these bear fruit into a unique or profound statement. Don't get me wrong, I love Madoka Magica. It is one of my favorites. It does not, however, contribute anything to serious philosophical discussion. Which is OK, because it doesn't have to! It's a fucking anime, not a philosophical treatise lol

Sure, but you don’t need to invent an entirely new philosophical system for a work to be philosophical. Madoka, like Kafka, is narrative that engages with existing philosophical ideas rather than presenting a brand new theory like Kant or Nietzsche, and that’s perfectly fine. Saying it’s "not philosophical" just because it works through narrative instead of formal argument misses the point imo

Yeah I can see where you're coming from. Perhaps it is a bit of a high bar to expect a Critique of Pure Reason from a cartoon lol

Meta shitposting about sentai-style magical girls isn't really a philosophical stance.

>>281401453
You could say nearly everything engages with existing philosophical ideas to an extent, unless the characters are somehow completely unable to express any thought or emotion.
Philosophy is about how people reason and define good/bad, right/wrong, after all.

But Madoka does in fact present a deeply philosophical question. It asks if evil is evil because it just really really wants to have sex with good.

You really can't put a Japanese cartoon to the same standard as a philosophical essay or work when judging it based on philosophical merit. An actual philosophy essay will always have more to say on philosophy then any form of fiction just based on the fact that the essay's purpose is entirely dependent on it's philosophy while the fictions purpose isn't.

Kyuubey isn't ever refuted, nor does the series attempt to refute him. As the audience, we're to side with the magical girls, but Kyuubey is intentionally depicted as "not right, but not wrong!" The theme here is systemic oppression, and the lesson isn't that the system is broken: the system works just fine, but YOU are not the one it works for. There is a critique of capitalism here, if that wasn't blatantly obvious already.
