I also really like how the ending explores how the show's premise, i.e. haruhi's antics (like having them repeat the same week over 15000 times) affects the characters, removing the fantastical elements is an opportunity for them to express themselves more, like koizumi being jealous that haruhi finds kyon interesting, it's like the flipside of that scene where asahina and him tell kyon to be suspicious of each other, which is pure fantasy organization politics.
And then of course the whole meat of the ending being how the time with haruhi had affected yuki, it's really excellent
As a side note, after watching the movie I talked to somebody that said they at some point watched the movie while knowing nothing about the show, which is really funny, because without it it's just a dour movie where characters you don't know talk to each other very vaguely, never explicitly explaining what's going on, and kyon is freaking out for no discernible reason
