I'm getting so fucking sick and tired of this dumb "waifu culture" surrounding anime. I've been rewatching retro anime lately and the animation and storytelling is 10x so much better man. Why can't we go back to this level of quality? "blah blah blah old good new bad" yes, unironically but not out of spite or trying to be contrarian here. I like me some new shit if it's good enough, but when it comes to anime? 3D slop inserted to speed up production time, shit writing, shit localization, and using waifu kawaii bait "omg she's so kawaii" get the fuck out of here man that shit is super gay and lame.

There is no reason anime with cute girls can't be well animated and it's not uncommon for them to be the best looking anime of their season. Of course there are a lot of people that don't consider character animation animation and so it doesn't count for them.

Anime has deadlines, and using 3d helps speed up production but also lightens the work load for studios. If you go back to fully hand drawn anime you'd get a quarter of the releases per season with double the budget costs and slave labor. The industry is already bad as it is with crunch.

First off, learn to spell. Second, the only reason you think this is because all of the poorly animated/poorly written stuff doesn't get discussed anymore. The vast majority of older anime was genuinely unwatchable slideshow trash rife with shounen tropes.

You don't really want to discuss just complain, but I will say that animation today in terms of overall general quality blows out the old stuff and it's not close. Maybe you don't like the art direction, and that's fine, but in terms of animation techniques and quality we're making good steps regularly. Science Saru has been showcasing a lot of good Sakuga style. Studios like Madhouse at the upper end showcase incredible potential for big names. I'll always love the surreal art style blends that Shaft does, and even if the stories are boring there's no denying that Kyoani produces some of the most beautiful frames and animations known to man. Even if you look over towards China and Korea, they're producing a lot of slave labor hand drawn tier shit people are just eating up and it has nothing to do with waifus in any of it.

The 90s was full of the same shit. Same type of designs overplayed so much it began to ran its course by the late 90s, same tropes like evil man in the high tower pulling the strings or cyborgs or whatever. Anime during the 2000s experimental period to now is when it got good.

Stop watching old OVAs and movies and start watching old TV anime.

With the exception of Sunrise anime, most fucking retro TV anime looked like shit and took more shortcuts and had cheaper animation than most modern TV series. Stand-out, extremely and consistently well animated TV anime were either Sunrise productions (who continued producing high quality TV anime into the digital and modern eras), or exceptions, like the one-time Miyazaki directed a TV anime.

Fucking Mushoku Tensei took the crown from Escaflowne recently for best looking isekai/fantasy anime and I think Escaflowne was one of the best looking TV anime ever made.

it's kinda funny because nowadays OVAs look like total ASS, while the base TV anime production value has gone up. They just normalized. Old shit was was basically 3 minutes of amazing animation and then total slideshow productions or re-using previous animation frames for the next 21 minutes... people here grew up watching Trigun but objectively the show looks like total fucking shit excluding the first 3 episodes.

You have to be conscious that even if they wanted to, they couldn't reproduce old style shows today. Part of it is legal. Obscenity laws changed and "mature" shows don't really skirt by anymore. They can't show gory details or super adult themes on most TV channels like NHK or Asahi or whatever the fuck the equivalent. In the 80s and 90s? Yeah Lum's tits were out and nobody batted an eye. There were rules that they followed sure but nobody complained about the occasional panty shot in Doraemon.

They got away with it in OVAs or late night cable subscription TV channels which were niche as fuck, but guess what? That market is also dying over there as it is over here.

In general, anime is not exempt from the infantilization of Japanese society. If you think anime is bad, their TV shows in general have gotten way, WAY, worse. It's also a symptom here in the west too. You lost your midnight softcore nudie channels, your 80s action flicks with boobies, your gory direct-to-vhs shlock. Slasher flicks are gone. We have "safe horny" and "safe horror" garbage like Terrifier or generic poorly dark as fuck movie set in a house with jump scares.

Yeah, so? All the real good stuff is at least a decade old. People naturally tend to judge things by their peaks rather than valleys. The highs are fewer and not as high, and that's what matters.

Leaving aside the mechanical aspects of those ovas, i actually believe we live now in the age of high production anime and the first coming of AAA anime, this of course will bury the industry due the lack of manpower.
