Only Yesterday. The childhood/memory sequences are completely done in an expressionistic way, where the world design and character designs are noticeably much softer and colorful, to create a visual short-hand that memories are inherently romanticized and childlike, contrasting to the adult world where things are more-realistic.
Pom Poko. The film uses so many unique visuals and transformations to represent emotions and ideas that it's basically impossible for me to try and name them all just for this thread. But you should watch the film if you haven't, because it's so expansive in how it uses animation's unique visual languages to communicate themes.

All of those started as a thing in comics
It's harder to stuff emotions in many small panels thus you make BIG signs than you can easily see on a page
