When I finally got to watching the last movie, I was in disbelief. I couldn't believe I waited more than a decade for it.
I love Eva and almost everything gainax related, but the rebuild movie really left a sour taste.

3.0 basically skipped one whole storyline. Anno confirmed that basic scenario does exist in some form. And that maybe they return to it at some point. But it's main reason why third and fourth movie feel so confusing and rushed. We are simply missing middle of story.
As for that story. Main reason why it was skipped was because it has no Shinji. Who is sealed in Eva until beginning of 3.0. And that THIS story is what preview at end of 2.0 was teasing for.

I only watched the first 2 rebuilds, the thing started to feel like Kingdom Hearts to me
