What is your definition for “potato” characters? Do they need to be short? Only rounded face of rounded face and body? Is personality a part of it as well or is this just art style? Where do you draw the line? Can real people be considered potatoes?

As far I’m aware FFXI Tarutaru is the origin of the term “potato” and I hold their general shape as the potato base. Short, rounded with stubby but thick limbs. Nowadays I see people calling characters like Riko a potato when they have a rounded face and tube bodies

I’m not sure when people started calling Taru Tarus “potatoes” but Potemayo was around the same time and had a character with “potato” in the name “pote-to mayo” I wonder if Potemayo was the origin of calling these characters “potatoes”

I think the head contributes to potato a lot more than the body, seems to be a rule for modern anime in general. Chito and Yuuri are the same proportions but most agree they are potato.

I also nominate the mashimaros for potato status.

The anime covers the more tame parts of the manga. It starts sliding into more and more feels right after that.
