Not really.
It started because Victoria (I think) thought it'd be funny to dress the future King Edward (I think) in a little sailor suit while they were onboard a ship, and then people (being the way they are) started copying it. It wasn't not any kind of attempt at machismo or anything

I know it's a controversial opinion, but William > Richard. William would have never sent Emma away. Also, everyone in Richard's life would have been telling him to marry Aurelia and he still sent her away. William, meanwhile, had everyone in his life telling him not to marry Emma, and he still wanted to run away with her.

Not sure why you spoilered it when as far as i can tell there really aren't any spoilers for later chapters here and probably only scares away other anons from replying. I don't really agree with the sentiment, despite the fact that sending her away is somewhat selfish act, i think his course of action was the best he could have done without putting everything he'd been building up to at risk. Aurelia was clearly suffering under the stress of society, so putting her out of the picture at least gave her some space to recover and let him handle the mingling. Separating her from her kids isn't great at all, but in a time where social responsibility came in front of personal relationships it's not really surprising, he probably wanted them to grow up to be responsible and logical and Aurelia wasn't really a good example for that.
That being said, i do find it REALLY funny how people are so readily willing to empathize with Richard's situation here when he's separating his own wife from her own children and forcing her to live in isolation whilst people treat William like satan for being a pawn who didn't have much room to make a decision.

This has its own problems, namely that when someone does the rules, you becomes trapped by them. Even if you actually don't get along at all, if someone is doing "their part" of a courtship, you're pressured to do yours, up unto having to get married. Also think about how relative class and money factors into this too. Even if Will had more balls, how easy would it have been to push Eleanor off? She's the daughter of a Viscount, whose mother initiated the meeting and whose father, despite being a total bastard who looks down on the Jones's, continues to push for the marriage for monetary and appearance reasons. Could they have avoided the marriage? Probably, but it would've been a mess to negotiate.

Yeah, the second season is weird. Spoilers for the anime and the rest of the manga ahead for anyone who's interested.
That whole bit, as far as i can tell, is basically the anime's replacement for the kidnapping arc, and it's quite a weird one at that. Instead of serving as a way to picture how bad Emma's situation is or how determined Will is to protect Emma, the anime basically uses it to introduce Hans as into the fold as a new romantic rival, which I feel kinda makes it feel way less impactful story-wise, and that's ignoring the fact that they basically got rid of one of the most essential aspects of that arc from the manga by just getting rid of the kidnapping and making it about Emma going to her old house (made even weirder by the fact that she PAID for a train to get here, basically on a whim).
With how weird it is, I wonder if the only reason it exists was because of budget/scope issues or because covering a kidnapping would infringe against the age rating they were going for, or something like that.

even knightly fashion took from their military garb
well depending on the time period at least keep in mind that from the early milites of the Carolingian empire to the knight in title only at the end of the ancient regime you are talking about more than a thousand years
things like puffed jackets where inspired by the arming coats worn under chain and then later plate and brigantine
brigantine in and of it's self was a mixing of armor and fashion
when plate armor was developed you had a lot of artistic and fashion expression in those as well especial with the high nobility but even lower nobility and even men at arms would have embellishments made to their plate
this is skipping over things like helmet decoration, heraldic design, outfitting you men at arms and a dozen other ways in which fashion and armor cross pollinated over those thousand years
heck even the tie you wear at formal events is derived from the scarfs worn by eastern light cavalry

I once had a small fire in my kitchen, the damage by the fire itself was not big, the damage from the smoke was much more significant.
Sure, if the fire had been going on for a while in a closed room, there'd be hot combustible gases everywhere and opening the window could trigger a kind of explosion.

Cleaning is the sort of thing that force me to evaluate the concept of "like." Obviously I don't like cleaning. But it's hard for me to avoid the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment I have when I have done it, especially after putting it off for too long. Going by the illustrations at the beginning of the volumes, the main story of Emma takes place around 1895-1897 (not fully in-line since it goes from '96 to '97, then back to '95), and Richard and Aurelia first met around 1872.

I think the main issue is that Colin reads much younger (like 6 at best) than he actually is, considering he's noted to be around Ericht's age (who seems more like 8).

Isn't it really the shorts that are infantilizing? I mean the sailor suit for actual seamen has long trousers. Modern Japanese school uniforms are the same. Boys wear shorts in elementary school but after it's all long pants. I guess there's something about showing legs that's seen as immature or childish. Of course, girls still wear sailor uniforms with skirts showing their legs even as they get older.

In some poorer areas boys wore short pants even in winter.
With a fast-growing kid you'd need new trousers every year or even more often.
If you can't afford that, you give him short pants and warm, woolen socks.
I guess that's how the association short pants - boys emerged. And it even permeated into the royal family, because it's cute ..

This.
This didn't happen out of thin air, people probably felt it at the time, especially the young with fewer vested interests.
The fact that Emma's maid uniform didn't transform her into a part of the furniture in Williams eyes, is already proof of that.

>How much of an advantage will marrying into lower nobility really be at this point
Virtually no advantage, unless you specifically want to curry favour with higher nobility and need a noble starting point.

I think the industrial revolution was the decline of the nobility, they had made their money on their estates with wool and stuff. Their authority of old was through the Norman kings and the manorial system and kept it through their estates, money and influence after the medieval age ended. But once these mill owners, industrialists, traders and businessmen of the industrial revolution began to equal them in wealth their authority and hold on the high offices in society began to diminish. The Russian Revolution and WW1 were the last nail in the coffin, they were all but irrelevant after that and 'society' had no real power.

You're simplifying that a bit too much. Richard didn't force her to live away out of a desire to get her out of his hair, he was genuinely concerned about her health which was actually suffering. But at the same time he was relieved that she wouldn't be there, although it was a blow to his family life it did aid his ambitions. He seems to have become more single minded as he aged and, while he still loves her, has grown used to being separated; I think his interactions with his wife later in the manga and in bangaihen are tragic. Although he does, quite naturally, accept her coming back he never seems to long for it.
