As with the last chapter, I really feel like Raiku messed up by introducing us to Cuffey and Elleby without context and then giving us their backstory after the fact (or at least this fast)

I think they have a compelling setup but it's just being thrust on us too quickly without letting us get to know them or get attached to them first. I really think it would have helped if the flashbacks we saw this chapter had been gradually inserted throughout the sequel so far, or even just over the past few chapters in particular: We know from Kolulu that he can make this kind of character motive/struggle land and I think if anything the ingredients here are even more compelling then what she had going on, but it's just not hitting for me.

For example a vial might contain "Zakeru" and so they could only use the vial to cast Zakeru, but with the device they can cast other lightning spells using the energy. I think it was a mistake to show in no uncertain terms that these two are 100% good guys. I actually felt a bit of tension when the boy whipped out those magic tendrils and a whole handful of spell jars. The mummy even appears to be in pain during the transfer. Either we should have seen these guys earlier in the story, or their loyalty should have been kept ambiguous until it matters.

This started out great with an amazing hook, but nothing has really changed in the plot since we began the quest to revive the other demons. We’re about three years deep and we haven’t even learned the whereabouts of popular characters like Zeon and Kid, and know practically nothing about Beliel’s faction other than the fact that he’s a big jerk and half his army is cute kids forced to do bad things against their will.

Huge opportunities for worldbuilding and character interactions, but we spend half the pages in pointless battles with the cards. Zatch and Kiyo should have simply BTFOd these guys back into the portal before it even had a chance to close. Instead of resolving the transfer this chapter, we’re going to spend another month grinding toward the inevitable outcome of the girl making a last minute save as the process finishes in the nick of time. Raikou is capable of better.
