Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the twenty-seventh volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping a short story by Rumiko Takahashi that came out around this time. Today, the scans I have of the one shot are the official VIZ ones. Today, that will be "Came the Mirror". In addition, I'll post the 2-page Godzilla tribute manga called "Someday He'll Get You" or "Someday He'll Get Me".

Original title is 冥界の約束. Furinkan and another source translated it as "The Hades Promise", but yes, 冥界 (meikai) is a Japanese word for the world of the dead.

Furinkan notes that: "This issue of Shonen Sunday celebrates the 10th anniversary of Kenjiro Hata's Hayate the Combat Butler (ハヤテのごとく!). Rumiko Takahashi among all the other artists with series being published at the time provided drawings to celebrate the achievement." But we don't have a scan of her artwork for this.

Furinkan gives us a note about the culture festivals of Japan: "Japanese schools from kindergarten all the way up to university have "culture festival" (文化祭/bunkasai) celebrations where students hold dance and theatrical performances, open small restaurants and hold other activities. These are open to the public and often former students of the school will visit. Typically these are held around November 3rd which is a national holiday in Japan (Culture Day)."

This day being pretty close to when the chapter was published, so this is another seasonal chapter.

This is a well-known myth and summarized well here, but Furinkan also included an explanation:

"The Orpheus Rule - this is a reference to the story from Greek mythology. Orpheus' wife Eurydice was died on their wedding day. Overcome with grief Orpheus descended into the underworld and bargained with Hades and Persephone to win Eurydice back. His mournful lyre playing managed to touch Persephone who convinced Hades to allow Orpheus to take Eurydice back to the living world. However Hades made Orpheus agree that as he guided Eurydice out of the underworld he would not look at her until they were both in the land of the living. Orpheus agreed, however as soon as he set foot out of the cavern entrance he turned around, not realizing Eurydice was still a few steps behind him and technically still in the underworld. As soon as he looked at her she vanished back to the land of the dead and Orpheus failed in his rescue attempt."

End of chapter. Here are two notes by Furinkan: "We see a paper lantern with one eye and a tongue hanging out. This is a chochin obake (提灯お化け), a haunted paper lantern. They appear often in ghost stories, prints and illustrations of haunted scenes.
Matsugo's laughter is written "kukukuku" (くくくく). This is considered to be "evil laughter"."

Furinkan also notes that this is a lot like the cursed caves in Ranma 1/2, but honestly, Rumiko did a similar plot in Urusei Yatsura too, so I think she just likes the device rather than it being a deliberate reference.

Furinkan notes that: "Kyokai no RINNE did not run in Shonen Sunday 2014 vol. 50." so, there is going to be a gap between this chapter and the next in the dates.

November 5th, 2014. Author's note:
"Q: Please tell us about a memorable experience from your student days.
A: We would eagerly discuss Kodai's adventures aboard the Yamato back in high school."

This is a reference to 宇宙戦艦ヤマト or Space Battleship Yamato, an incredibly influential anime series.

End of chapter. Trap hole saved the mood. I was a bit confused by Renge's line here and the Japanese: "死神一高恐るるに足らずだね" seems to say she overestimated it. So, that might be a mistranslation. She did say まずい and it was written in the caption lopsided, so "gross" in a different font works well.

Three pages of full color this time. And Rin-ne got on the cover properly. This is presumably because this is the week that the Rin-ne anime was announced. It ultimately got three seasons and while it didn't cover all the material, it covered a lot. It actually adapted that last little story as its final episode, which is a bit interesting.

The original Japanese was "十文字さーん宅配便でーす" with the extended sounds though, so they did what they could. "Paaackage delivered for Jumonji-saaan", maybe?

I actually guessed it after the fifth page since their jaws do have a distinctive look. Nutcracker dolls are German in origin.

Rumiko used the term クルミ割り人形 which means walnut cracking doll literally. くるみ割り人形 seems to be the term for nutcracker most commonly used.

Original title was デコレーション which is dekoreeshon, so a loanword from the English word decoration. The Merry X'mas were not redrawn on this cover.

Furinkan notes that: "Christmas cards by the artists of Shonen Sunday were published in this issue. Readers could enter a lottery to win copies of them. This is a double issue so nothing was published the following week. This issue also contains Christmas card illustrations by the various authors." No images though.

The Japanese term for this lantern is 走馬灯. According to a quick Google (showing a cultural note by the Japanese Wiki which is a translated section of Japanese Wikipedia, it seems), it is a kind of garden lantern which is crafted to show a revolving shadow picture with its inside and outside frames.

They also note that: "Recently, somato has come to be used in words to describe the flashback of one's lifetime memory, such as somato phenomenon (a flashback phenomenon) and somato experience (a flashback experience), which is said to be experienced by a dying person — or which a near-death experiencer says h (or she) saw. It becomes rare for the public to see the real somato, so the word somato is often misunderstood to indicate the phenomenon itself."

Yup, the facial hair evokes the bizarre cheek hair on a Daruma doll. I'll copy and paste a note regarding these here: "Daruma dolls are hollow, round Japanese dolls modelled after Bodhidharma. They are considered a talisman of good luck and perseverance. The left eye is filled in when the owner sets a goal or makes a wish. The second is filled in once that is fulfilled." I got this off Furinkan at some point. Apparently, the eyebrows are deliberately stylized to look like cranes and the cheek hair is stylized to look like tortoise shell. These are because both are symbols of longevity.

鏡が来た (Kagami ga Kita) or "Came the Mirror" was published on July 11th, 2014 in Big Comic Superior. As such, it was published a good bit before these chapters. Big Comic Superior is another seinen magazine by Shogakukan. I do not know why they have so many different ones. It was actually on the cover of this one.

This translation is an official one released by VIZ. Also, it has the original full colors! Yay! Thank you VIZ. It was collected in Came the Mirror and Other Tales, which came out recently. Since it was the main story in that collection, there's a few images I can post from it.
