Is Fate/Zero a masterpiece or an unnecessary prequel?

Masterpiece. The rest of fate is unneeded and shounen slop.

Neither really, but more the latter than the former. It doesn't contain anything significant that the original story didn't already express well enough, and there are a variety of anachronisms in order to give Kirei and Saber character arcs and hence justify its existence as a story. As a standalone story, it also has plenty of its own problems, mainly involving cheesiness, self-indulgence, and superficiality. That said, Butcher did express Kirei's journey of self-discovery (as a conduit of Butcher's own self-discovery) very well. Kirei's.

It did great at weaving a compelling story from the preexisting bits of info we had. A similar treatment of the Third War someday would be cool too.

It's pretty good, especially considering Urobutcher's track record, but it's not as vital to FSN as something like FHA is. It fits well as something to consoom after SN, especially so if you put hollow after it to cap it off with its happy ending, but it's not necessary to the story. Even when ignoring the creative liberties taken in the characters, it's moreso just an excuse to show off what a truly action-packed HGW is like, which while appreciated was never really the point of Nasu's Fate.

3rd HGW has potential, but I'd be more keen to see it in an FHA adaptation where Bazett defeats the other 5 LARPing Masters as well. Could even have an episode that's just the first 4 days of that war from his PoV

By his*, I mean Angra's perspective. You could also have him narrate over a montage of the following events and battles, considering he was put in the Grail the moment he perished

There should be a interpretation of the third grail war. I mean it's the event with the most notable timeline deviations outside of the class card system for the Kaleidverse.

Say what you will but it's still the best prequel in fiction. Hopefully the novel gets an official translation though since Ufotable's anime hasn't aged that well
