How much will my experience improve if I learn nip?
Anonymous No.281446586
You'll be able to read all the stuff that nobody bothers translating. And you won't need to worry about halfhearted translators dropping series partway through.

You'll have less experiences because of the time investment required to not only learn conversational Japanese but also learn the idioms and slang not to mention the cultural and historical context that's often subtextual. Yes, that stuff is necessary when it comes to improving your experience. Otherwise, you might as well learn French and read French scans. Add up all the time it will take to not just learn the language but also the history, culture, and pop culture, to where you're having dreams in Japanese and can write creatively in Japanese, and ask yourself what else you could be doing with that time. Your time here is limited, moreso when factoring in working.

For manga, a lot. No need to wait for scanlators.
For anime, you'll realize people talk like retards there.

A lot. You know for sure what you're reading and you have access to infinite manga. That's just knowing how to read, not even listening, speaking or writing, but certain things will come naturally as a result as well when you pick up other skills.

Have fun trying (and ultimately) failing to learn a second language, let alone one from an entirely different language family. All that time will definitely be well-spent!

Bitch, please.
I learned a second language in elementary school (English, mandatory), a third language in middle school (German, elective), a fourth language in high school (Latin, mandatory), and a fifth language in college (Japanese, self-study).

Can they? I've never seen such an example.
But I did recently see a claim that Japanese people being abysmally bad at English is simply because they don't need it, and I felt that it may be true. I had to learn English because my country doesn't have its own versions of Reddit and 4chan. Japan does.

I lost most of my interest in manga, anime and Japan in general on my journey of learning Japanese. By the time I've passed my JLPR N2 exam I've stopped consuming any JP language content outside of idol stuff.

If you enjoy the nuances of language and can find fun in the learning process itself, you'll get a lot out of it. It might be a while before it "clicks" and you become capable of understanding it easily, but as long as you avoid the doomposting from fags who couldn't do it you'll be fine.

You'll realise how stilted pretty much every translation is, and it'll probably upset you for a while before you come to accept that it's generally the best they could do while preserving as much as they could of the original. You'll also see how much subs are just made up in order to sound plausible. Also, Stream of consciousness style text also suits the language very well due to how much the language can drop if there's adequate context and has a fun rhythm to it, which is why there's so much of it.

What exactly are you hoping to see?
I began learning Japanese for retro games since only a small number of them got translated and it always came with compromises like the platform. Then I started reading manga for learning purposes and now I haven't played a game in five years because I spent all my free time reading. I've not been on /vr/ in ages and I don't see why I should check on them.

Chinese, Korean and Japanese people in international business speaks very good English, on par with the Nordics, even if some of them have a heavier accent than others. People who only learned it in school and only use Japanese/Chinese/Korean for their whole lives are basically at level 0.

That's giving many translators too much credit. Some of them are trying their best but there's enough that don't really give a shit and others where their best simply is far from sufficient.

Making shit up completely is obviously inexcusable, but he's probably speaking more along the lines of literal vs liberal translation. Some readers don't know a lick of Japanese but very vehement on how something should be translated the moment a piece of the raw is made known to them in summary, not knowing how difficult it is to translate from comprehension in Japanese to making sense in English. Even you're going to be liberal, you have to be liberal correctly as well, it's very hard in certain instances.

Sure, I may not be able to speak or understand German or Latin today, but if you knew Japanese as well as I knew those languages at the point of my respective final tests in those subjects, you'd totally be able to read raw manga. It's just a matter of continuing to use the language to not forget it.
