Code Geass is a fantastic spectacle that made a lot of very interesting choices that could be described as reading the Wikipedia article on postcolonial literature and then making the most chuunibyou version possible as the vehicle for a wild take on the Gundam formula, but it’s incredibly messy. The second season is infamous for its contrived loops of school SoL and vacations to China. There are plenty of bits of good animation and iconic imagery but think about the very end for a second. Zero attacking the parade and Lulu’s death. How are the shots composed? What is the color like? Now think about the last episode of Steins;Gate.
I will defend CG in ways you’ve probably never even seen before, but S;G is even more refined than that.

Haruhi is baby’s first meta commentary on otaku subculture and girl (and friends) cure loner wrapped in an urban science fantasy shell. S;G does the exact same thing but gives its characters much more detailed backstories, more realistic emotions, and even takes all of the meta elements about otaku subculture further. Haruhi is dead on accurate for what it’s trying to portray but still just kind of does all of the classic storylines while winking and pulling basic “person behind the trope” twists that especially look silly under Monogatari’s umbrella.
