Namek arc is great. It's legitimately one of the two few well-written segments in Dragon Ball, along with the Saiyan arc. It features one overarching villain (Freeza, and his army as proxies). It feels much more cohesive, almost like progression in a video game or something. How we arrive on Namek, sneak around Freeza's men for a while, fight our way through his strongest soldiers until he finally catches on to our heroes and decides to step in himself.
There's a-lot of tension and dramatic irony surrounding who knows what, how do we steal the Dragon Balls, how do they work, "where is that power level coming from?", etc. Always on your toes working up to that looming final battle. And when he finally shows up the fighting is so VIOLENT that the planet falls apart over time. I don't know of a more iconic backdrop than "dying Namek."
Really, Namek is a great arc and Freeza is an excellent villain all-around because he perfectly embodies everything Goku hates and he has enough panel presence to carry the entire extremely long final battle. Everything that came afterwards feels so out of nowhere and disconnected to what happened before. And while I don't hate Trunks, his character did some irreparable damage to this series.
