I think they took some of the complaints to heart, the movie is more straightforward and easy to follow, the first lovie tried WAY too hard at times, you borderline need to rewatch it to get what's going on.
This one is actually a good mononoke story and the two leads (botan and Fuki) have good chemistry with each other. It also nails what happens when several women compete against each other, bunch of harpies.

I made the point in the last thread that the first film kind of had no choice but to be that way because it had to establish a lot more on top of the actual premise. In this film, there's no need to establish every character, this setting and so on. This movie only has to focus on its own premise since all that stuff was taken care of.

Movie one still tried to cram A LOT of extra imagery and the like on top of the story.
This movie does a good job building on its main theme loss of identity and sacrificing what you love for the ooku, just way more brutal.

I somehow managed to watch the TV show for the first time a few weeks ago and watched both movies today. I didn't like the movies as much as the TV show but the TV show is like the greatest thing ever made so it's a high bar. Both are still really good though, I think I liked the first more but the 2nd hit more emotionally. Gorgeous direction and visuals in both.

>>281464934
I think there's space for both, I think the TV show has the best balance of surrealism, 2 is a little light and 1 might be a little heavy (speaking of the movies) but I think both work excellently. I was a little lost in the 1st logically but emotionally it made sense which is what matters.

It is a different guy from the TV show and his spirit Bagua is different. All the medicine sellers are based on the I Ching and movie guy is Ri, associated with fire, radiance and glow (makes sense that he's more animated and proactive), while tv show medicine seller is Kun, ground, earth, and perception/reception (which explains his more passive and reactive nature.)

Yes, it's a different guy. The director talked about it, there are 64 medicine sellers whose swords are named after I Ching symbols, and each having a shingi/hyper bound to it. 8 of those swords are particulary powerful, and Ri sword (tv series) and Kon sword (movie) belong to this group.
Shingi are also their own persons, lending their bodies to medicine sellers at the right time.
They all live in realm not bound by time, and from which everything originated, in headquarters called juuyoku (ten wings).

That might be because of their bagua. Kon is earth and receptiveness, he's bound by customs and behaves more humanly.
Ri is fire and glowing, he's far more ethereal and generally behaves as someone who's detached from humanity would, being more of a guardian angel or protector kami.

All I can find is that the sword was a gift from ruler of Korea to ruler of Japan, and it was a ceremonial sword with supposedly magical power. There is nothing really beyond this, except some political controversy that is irrelevant here.
It's a relatively popular design in anime and video games, but they never really go deeper than exotic look.

He's fine since this Kusuriuri has a somewhat different personality too. If it were just him voicing the old Kusuriuri or being a copy of the way he acts, then it'd probably be bad.

I mean, this movie kinda went out of its way to show that the councilmen/other higher up guys are causing a much more serious rot from the inside of the Ooku with all the corruption and shit that was going on. The consort squabbling seemed a bit less damaging in comparison.

Ayakashi -> Mononoke -> New Mononoke is the correct order right, I'm not missing anything I didn't know about?

Yes, that's the right order, it's not a series mainstream enough to get many entries.
There are also manga adaptations, but they are just series/movie in readable form.

The translations of the words have bothered me since the start. It's accurate but doesn't it seem like truth overlaps with both shape and reason/excuse? Makoto and Kotowari should be opposites. Would it be stupid to pick the word "lie" instead?

Personally, no. Think of them as asked questions.
>What is your form?
Meaning, what shape do you take, in what way do you appear/exist?
>What is your truth?
Meaning, what is your core, what ARE you?
>What is your reason?
Meaning, what is your motive, what DRIVES you?
Form, Truth and Reason is actually an excellent translation imo.

The word "lie" would not really work in the context. Form is what ayakashi ghost's negative emotions bonded with, truth is who/what is the source of negative emotions (true identity), reason is why those negative emotions happened. I think in Umibozu medicine seller gives his own explanation, but I need to look it up, but either way official translation actually fits the best in my opinion.

I agree with what, who, why.
The Why behind the apparition's actions appears to be its story and stories are lies so even if that word is an incorrect translation it spoke to me, surely just a wonky train of thought on my part. I'm being a dangerous translator.
Reasons, hidden truths, what's not outwardly apparent, obfuscated by "the way things are". Sounds like someone's making up excuses to burn people alive.

The movie genuinely leads you to believe, from the get go that, much like last movie and most mononoke stories, her grudge is against those who forced her to abort, the deaths support it.
Then you actually get the flashback and actually understand who she was lashing out against for real.

Form, Truth and Reason make up the whole being of a mononoke, they are its constituent elements. The Kusuriuri fear the lack of them, because they are also Mononoke, and without Form, Truth and Reason, they cease to be.

Their Reason is pretty simply, do their duty and exorcise hostile mononoke. Presumably their Truth is simply an extension of that as part of their divine service.

I can't remember exactly how I felt about the first film, I'll have to rewatch it again to be certain, but one thing I am sure of is that this film was easier to follow. Whether the language isn't as heavily loaded with historical terminology, or editing isn't as frantic, or there's just less dialogue to follow - I had no issue following this film but I remember having to rewind the last one every now and again to simultaneously understand what's being said and appreciate the animation. I enjoyed this one a lot; it felt more like a 3 episode arc from the series rather than a film, short and sweet.

But the story so far never said they serve Inari, it could be more complicated than the original myth. There should certainly be something on how the top 8 were chosen, some deeper motivation, since mononoke are formed by the most intense emotions.

The editing and pacing 100%, the first movie jumped around WAY too much. This one is the result of that feedback, so it's a really good traditional mononoke arc that feels like reverse zashiki warashi.

Yeah I thought so. The artstyle of Monoke is so impressive in its own right that it warrants lingering static shots and less cuts. I remember thinking with the first film that I couldn't actually take in everything I was seeing, which is a shame because I love the way it looks. I still think the anime had better presentation overall than either film, but they still look great.
