I think they took some of the complaints to heart, the movie is more straightforward and easy to follow, the first lovie tried WAY too hard at times, you borderline need to rewatch it to get what's going on.
This one is actually a good mononoke story and the two leads (botan and Fuki) have good chemistry with each other. It also nails what happens when several women compete against each other, bunch of harpies.
>>281466901
I made the point in the last thread that the first film kind of had no choice but to be that way because it had to establish a lot more on top of the actual premise. In this film, there's no need to establish every character, this setting and so on. This movie only has to focus on its own premise since all that stuff was taken care of.
>>281467037
It's definitely meant to be a close-knit trilogy working as one story.

Movie one still tried to cram A LOT of extra imagery and the like on top of the story.
This movie does a good job building on its main theme loss of identity and sacrificing what you love for the ooku, just way more brutal.

I somehow managed to watch the TV show for the first time a few weeks ago and watched both movies today. I didn't like the movies as much as the TV show but the TV show is like the greatest thing ever made so it's a high bar. Both are still really good though, I think I liked the first more but the 2nd hit more emotionally. Gorgeous direction and visuals in both.
>>281464934
I think there's space for both, I think the TV show has the best balance of surrealism, 2 is a little light and 1 might be a little heavy (speaking of the movies) but I think both work excellently. I was a little lost in the 1st logically but emotionally it made sense which is what matters.

Yes, it's a different guy. The director talked about it, there are 64 medicine sellers whose swords are named after I Ching symbols, and each having a shingi/hyper bound to it. 8 of those swords are particulary powerful, and Ri sword (tv series) and Kon sword (movie) belong to this group.
Shingi are also their own persons, lending their bodies to medicine sellers at the right time.
They all live in realm not bound by time, and from which everything originated, in headquarters called juuyoku (ten wings).

That might be because of their bagua. Kon is earth and receptiveness, he's bound by customs and behaves more humanly.
Ri is fire and glowing, he's far more ethereal and generally behaves as someone who's detached from humanity would, being more of a guardian angel or protector kami.

Everyone else is daughters from noble families given to him for inflluence and other hot bitches.
The princess was her baby too, but she's not allowed to raise her and was given to lady Katsunuma.

First movie self concluded.
The ooku was killing your women who wanted out and when Kitagawa discovered it and the fact her bestie died too she jumped into the well and took her life. Then became karakasa when Asa and Kame appeared and took revenge on the women who fucked them over.
This movie picks up after the first one but it's still a different mystery, unrelated to the BIG ONE about the water goddess that will be in the next movie.

Kitagawa didn't discover anything, she simply went crazy cause of burnout syndrome. Her bestie got sent out, like Asa was doing to Kame, and that was the tipping point cause she was left with pressure of her work, jealousy of other maids, and nothing to ease her mind. Utayama's crime was that she was treating maids like mindless drones and was covering up suicides in fear of losing her position.

It was always bound to be a shitshow by design. But it's better for the Emperors to have the nobles fighting via sending hot daughters to get into his bed than they warring around.

By third movie he might even reveal they meet every thursday for mahjong.

Second movie introduces new minor characters but Fuki (the brown-skinned concubine who was the emperor's favorite in the first movie) and Botan (the red-head concubine who was sort of in the background) play big parts and you find out more about them and their families. Asa, the scribe, has a few cameos but doesn't have a big part.

Probably pretty slim. Combat against the Mononoke seems to be mostly an issue of finding their Truth and Reason (since the Shape is always pretty self-evident). Once the big sword is drawn, the Mononoke is pretty much overpowered.
Would still be cool, though, albeit I don't think it would fit the series. It seems that they are just dispatched at different points of space and time and they don't seem to need any help.

Sure it introduces characters and the setting, but it does nothing with the main premise in general since it gets sidetracked into a dead maid who wants revenge.
Just like this movie introduces the issues with the ruling class of said place, and gets sidetracked with a dead woman.
No movie has approached the main plot yet, even remotely.

The word "lie" would not really work in the context. Form is what ayakashi ghost's negative emotions bonded with, truth is who/what is the source of negative emotions (true identity), reason is why those negative emotions happened. I think in Umibozu medicine seller gives his own explanation, but I need to look it up, but either way official translation actually fits the best in my opinion.

The Why behind the apparition's actions appears to be its story and stories are lies so even if that word is an incorrect translation it spoke to me, surely just a wonky train of thought on my part. I'm being a dangerous translator.
Reasons, hidden truths, what's not outwardly apparent, obfuscated by "the way things are". Sounds like someone's making up excuses to burn people alive.

I can't remember exactly how I felt about the first film, I'll have to rewatch it again to be certain, but one thing I am sure of is that this film was easier to follow. Whether the language isn't as heavily loaded with historical terminology, or editing isn't as frantic, or there's just less dialogue to follow - I had no issue following this film but I remember having to rewind the last one every now and again to simultaneously understand what's being said and appreciate the animation. I enjoyed this one a lot; it felt more like a 3 episode arc from the series rather than a film, short and sweet.

And before you normalfags ask, the best movie of this year is Infinity Castle and the best movie of last year is Look Back. You wouldn't understand why.

Wonder if fixing the corpse water was what helped Fuki get pregnant. Then Medicine Seller would finally doing something true to their title lol.
Maybe in the third movie it'll all be about how it's one giant plot from the Mother Empress to control the Emperor and stop him from having heir.

The eye spawned the Karakasa from the sky in the first movie. This time it's underground. Maybe next time it'll be the ground itself, like this anon

Makes sense if it's ground. Movies 1 and 2 were water and fire theme so we still need earth.
