Christians used to be adverse to consuming media that had any depiction of demons and feminine men. Back then they even claimed that the Exorcist was hollywood satanic propaganda because it had profanity and gore, but embraced it the moment it became the most Christian film relative to other hollywood films released after it.
It's not that anime became more Christian, it's that Christians became less Christian. As good as Veggie Tales is, it is boring to watch nothing but that. So they assume that secular media made by non-Christians (Matrix, FMA, etc) are pro-Christian despite the medium having porn, gore, and blasphemy that they willingly overlook to see the broader message.
That's what they don't get when they try to ban non-Christian stuff. All of the things that they like about the world wouldn't exist in their ideal Christian ethnostate. It came from a secular environment where people can sincerely express themselves and their ideas. No one remembers and recounts a singe hays code film, but they do remember a lot of anime.
