I mean it kinda has to happen when you pit a bunch of heroes together, right? The King Arthur of Welsh folklore was no less a monster than Cu Chulainn. Inevitable, someone HAS to lose. The monsters and armies he took down were in some ways every bit as terrible as the Twelve Labors of Heracles. Nowadays, only the stories after Camelot was established are popular, but before the French got their hands on him, Arthur was, due to a combination of a bunch of different disparate folk tales, essentially a country-trotting superheroes who took down monsters left and right, while also singlehanded taking down dozens of soldiers in one blow (which, admittedly, was a fairly normal ability that a lot of Welsh folklore heroes had).

It's more popular so it doesn't matter. There is no "true" King Arthur canon. Unlike other major heroes who had major important stories that serve as the foundations for everything else, the legend of Arthur was slowly built upon by a bunch of different writes, bards and historians over the course of many centuries. He wasn't even a king originally, just a somewhat prominent general. The exact origins of his name and identity are largely unknown (the idea that he's derived from a Roman general named Artorius is also just speculation). The earliest known stories of Arthur weren't all that special, but his name somehow spread throughout Britain and people just kept adding more and more to his myth, some contradictory, others blatantly stolen from other actual historical events, until it all converged into the singular legend of Arthur, with him evolving into a messianic figure who would be destined to return someday. Then at some point he became a king, and the initial concepts of the Knights of the Round Table and Camelot were born. Then the French got their hands on him, and decided to expand on his post-coronation era, especially with the Round Table. Eventually, characters like Gawain, Percival, Lancelot and Galahad became more popular, overshadowing Arthur himself. But the important thing to note is that before he became King of the British Isles, King Arthur was a monster-slaying, army-conquer superhuman messiah.

When Lancer launched Gae Bolg on Saber, he didn't state that it couldn't miss beforehand. We only learned its properties later on, well after this fight. Lancer stated that the attack was sure-kill, but nearly all Noble Phantasms are sure-kill. Gae Bolg, Excalibur, Nine Lives, Caladbolg, these are all weapons designed to end the enemy's life in one strike. Nearly all of them fail. Even the VN's most powerful Noble Phantasm, Ea, fails to kill anyone.

The reason people latch onto Gae Bolg specifically is because, after this fight, we see a description of it and learn that it's a strike that reverses causality. It's the VN's first example of an esoteric power that fucks with the laws of physics, so it retroactively became a big deal. But something you have to understand about Type-Moon is that esoteric physics-defying bullshit is usually just a parlor trick. At the end of the day, do you know what the greatest power in any Nasu story is? Raw brute force. This principle is present in Notes, Tsukihime, Fate and even Kara no Kyoukai. The most power individual in KnK isn't the bitch who can one-shot (almost) anything or the thousand-year-old monk with a magic monster apartment. No, it's the bitch who twists things. Raw power, completely inelegant brute force.

The only individuals he kills with Gate of Babylon are Medea and Heracles in UBW. Pretty much all NPs fail 50-70% of the time. In most stories, a Noble Phantasm will be lucky to kill even one individual, two at most. After all, there are only seven Servants. You can't kill any of them off too early.

I enjoyed reading both F/SN and F/HA and I think that the fights are the weakest part. There were so many moments where attacks are described as unavoidable and certain death just to be subverted. If you do it once, fine, but at some point I started finding it comical. For me, the character and SoL moments are where Nasu shines, while the fights mostly bored me.
Anonymous No.281476636 >>281476794

Because nearly all attacks ARE supposed to be certain death. How many times do you think Gae Bolg failed to hit its mark back when Cu Chulainn was alive? How often do you think King Arthur ran into a situation where Excalibur failed to atomize its target?

The narration isn't wholly impartial. It's from Shirou's viewpoint. When he says something is sure-hit, it means he expects it to be so. From his viewpoint (and this matters because he has the ability to instantly read and understand most weapons he sees), these weapons should be sure-hit. Shirou isn't impartial enough to narrate things purely objectively.

>he has the ability to instantly read and understand most weapons he sees
He learns of their structure, but he doesn't get a perfect printout of how they work unless he actually sees them at work. Seeing Gae Bolg doesn't tell him exactly what the spear is and does, which is why he doesn't instantly learn every servant's name upon first meeting.
Anonymous No.281477134

To be fair, that's because he saved it for situations when things were most dire.
Anonymous No.281477137

No? That's wrong. We see multiple times that he can immediately understand what a weapon does from the moment he lays eyes on it. At first, it was all subconscious. The information was downloaded into his brain but he wasn't actively aware of it. After he became more aware of the nature of his ability, he was able to access this info more fluidly.

Unlimited Blade Works functions by automatically scanning and storing weapons in his internal world. As long as a weapon has been saved in UBW, Shirou knows how it works. He doesn't need to see it work, nor does he have to use it himself. He knows exactly what a weapon's all about so long as it's stored. Subsequently, weapons that he can't scan like Ea also can't be immediately understood.

He didn't injure Gilgamesh. He just held him off for 12 hours, which is admittedly pretty impressive. But perhaps slightly less so when you consider that Gil could have ended it any time if he didn't feel too proud to Enkidu him, or that his kit is incredibly defense-oriented. Like him having super high agility, Protection from Arrows, Battle Continuation, and some nasty runes.
