Nah, Sakurai never intended it to be another long-running series. Apparently he was doodling sci-fi tacticool stuff and his editor saw them and urged him to make a short series out of it

Interesting choice. Initially I thought he cheaped out on the background, but a dirt trail background might lessen the impact of that busted skull

This is the best moment in the whole manga. Such a shame that most of the interactions between the group aren't very good because this is great.
And that's that!
So what did you think?
I think it was a fun action sci-fi. That's what the author planned on and I think he accomplished that. Can see it be made into a movie.
Also, chief a cute!

Well I'm glad they made it a short one because it wasn't really solid enough for a long running manga. Cool visuals. OK characters. Good for what it is.

Definitely could have benefited from more soldier banter like this but how the hell is some Otaku mangaka supposed to know what that looks like
>>281481439
It was fun, although the characters didn't match up to the Ajin ones. Still definitely worth the read, and I might reread it one of these days to get the whole thing in one go. Real fucking shame Gamon prefers to draw loli porn, but at least he's good at that as well.

It definitely WASN'T worth a read during its serialization. First it suddenly switched to bimonthly schedule after a few months, then the final chapter took 4 months to come out on top of that. Meanwhile the entire thing is basically an action-focused movie, which is something you watch in one go.

Pretty decent, but missed an opportunity to expand the mystery a little more. I love it when they don't explain everything, but there's a better way to do it. In this case, it feels like it lacks something, like nothing really interesting happened
3/5
Great art, a good setting for an action piece, decent-ish characters but too short and what's in doesn't flow very well. It's just enter the mine, exit the mine, drive a car, it wouldn't be even an hour if it was made into a movie.

Thanks OP
It was a fun story, but I agree with the sentiment that the overall world building and character interactions felt a little flat. I like Gamon's art and premises. Maybe he should get someone to work on the plot/story

Pretty good but almost too short, it felt like the first 3 episodes of a 12 episode anime. A couple extra chapters in the mines would have given the cast more time to bounce off each other. Half the fun of Ajin was the action, the other half was seeing a bunch of really interesting characters interact with each other, which The Pool feels like it's missing. I'd definitely be interested in a sequel or a new story set in the world though.

Found out this was finished today by coincidence, while looking for more completed manga to read. Disappointed to find out it's only a few chapters, would make a great longer series.

I think if this was adapted into the first episode of an early 2000s anime by Sunrise Studio 6 or 7 (namely with either The Big O or Witch Hunter Robin staffs) with 24 episodes, it'd be one of the single greatest TV shows ever made. As it stands, it's alright.

Yeah it's a fun little story, really good for what it is but it is ultimately just something simple. Kinda surprised it did actually end up being really short; like it felt like it would be based on how the story was going but given the setting had so much room for stuff I was expecting things to go off the rails, but I'm not disappointed or anything.
I'll for sure re-read it at some point, maybe when the volume comes out.
Could someone help me understand what's going on with Chief's pistol, specifically what's down the barrel that kinda looks like a camera? My first thoughts were some sorta lens system for a laser or that it's the head of a seeking micromissile, but the early chapters specifically said no high-tech allowed. Tho now I guess we also have brain scanners. Am I just retarded?

Certainly a choice.
